Playing only one game type.

Postby qeee1 on Wed Dec 13, 2006 7:37 pm

Do you think by playing only one game type all the time you are more likely to go up the scoreboard. Plenty of people seem to do it.

Case 1: Dirty Birds only playing doubles/triples- quickly moved to the top of the scoreboard.

Case 2: Wacicha only plays terminator classic map escalating, used to be around 1600 points, now up to 2,200

Case 3: A bunch of high ranking people who play freestyle escalating.

Personally I like to think players should vary their game. I play everything more or less. The only game type I refuse to play is freestyle, because I don't have time. Honestly, I respect players more who play lots of different game types. Show versatility and such.

Thoughts?

Change games? Why?

Postby darklining on Wed Dec 13, 2006 8:18 pm

Why should we change our type of games if we seem to enjoy that form better? Personally, i enjoy a 3 player game thats an all out war to the end, some people may enjoy doubles, so be it. Let other people have their own opinion about games, and who cares about the scoreboards? I for one don't go ahead and check them everyday, why should i?

You can respect whatever you want, but you shouldn't be the influencing factor in whether someone changes the way he/she plays.

he's just making a point. He never said you have to do anything, nor did he say it was wrong. I agree that being able to play several different settings equally as well is a good and admirable skill. I can also see how its good for your points to play one, stick to what you do best and you'll go far. Personally I only play unlimited forts with just about any other settings, but I can't stand not being able to long distance fortify. :D :)

Yeah, if you wanna play one game type that's fine, but in my estimation the most skilled players are those who are versatile.

I've tried every map at least once, but certain maps just aren't appealing to me. I stick mostly with my favorite, classic.

As for the card settings, I prefer escalating, but I'll play flat rate and no cards to once in a while.

I play freestyle games occasionally, but the are to time consuming

quee, i reccomend you open up 10-20 6 player terminator games and let me know how your score is at the end,

I actually do happen to play every type and most maps, but if you think that its anything except less confusing to play the same game type, give it a try

and join waccia's games, let me know how many you win

also, freestyle escalating is just fun, multiple people, if you win adreneline pumps as you kill player after player, chasing people down hoping they dont start,

i lost one last week, over 100 pts, because spy sweeper stopped me on my last attack, the other guy jumped in cashed his cards...i lost 30 instead of winning 100+....cant beat it

Being good at a variety of styles CAN mean you are better than a player who is VERY good at one style. It just depends how you weight the criteria and how good each person is.

Being a jack of all trades certainly shows versatility and different types of ability....but you may not be the best at any single type, and there lies your weakness.

On the other hand, perhaps wacicha is the best classic/escalating/terminator player there is, and maybe he isn't as good at the other settings (this is all just an example).....however if he is MUCH better than everyone else at his settings than perhaps he could still be considered a better player than the jack of all trades.

Like I said, it all depends on how you weight the criteria.

For me personally, I seem to make most of my points from freestyle escalating games. That also happens to be my favorite setting because it actually provides a thrill of possibly being interrupted, and each second can be more crucial than sequential games. I also like the fact that with good strategy and a little luck you can almost always come back and take a win, no matter how dysmal your position was. That is often not true in sequential games and almost never true in flat rate/no cards.

Anyway, I love them so that is what I prefer to play :D

I juggle I am a standard or doubles player who loves to play triples but doesnt that often. I love escalating but I played 4 doubles games with eye84free and no I am also addicted to no cards. And 99% of my games are unlimited but I will play chained or adjacent for a tourney or a doubles partner who wants to. And I am normally sequential but I will play freestyle to especialy if I find a game thats about to start so its about 60 to 40 for sequential

I just looked it up and my record on Freestyle escalating singles games (any map, fortification and #) is 31-24, which is indeed better than my overall win rate (which I believe is just below 50%)

I agree with qeee. And I got at least 1 standard victory in each map, except those I refuse to play (crossword, Indochina and now world2.0, since I hate the doubles game Im playing in it, and I dont want enve see that map again, at least during a good time).

Variety is awesome, and I dont think classic map is soooo good, I prefer Europe map much more.

I don't play freestyle much about 1 out of 50 games but I would really like to try it in a real time game

Right now I've been playing much only flat rate, freestyle games... mainly terminator, with some regular singles games. I like how with flat rate cards, capturing countries is a whole lot more important than just storing up troops, and I like how the timing of your turns is important with freestyle games (plus I'm leaving for vacation in a week, and sequential games might not finish in time, especially if you have slow-playing players) Once I get back I'll try some more sequential games, and may even give a few different card options a go... but I think the majority of my games will remain freestyle flat rate terminator games

Just looking at the only two current generals.... once seems to be only playing doubles, while the other plays only triples...

i have noticed, that while I used to play every game time and every map often I would go from private to upper captain and down again and since I have started playing mostly doubles escalating unlimited I have gone up from captain to about 1900...

However I still will and do play everything ... although I prefer unl forts.

I dabble in a few flate rate card games - but as per frigging usual this happens: 3 players left in flat rate stalemate and puts me right off flat rate.
As far as other maps are concerned - the only map from me is still the classic, as It's the only one with the ability to move from one side of the board to the other (I know world 2.0 does as well - but it's too big for 6 players and I'll give it a crack when the 8 player games come out) Classic allows so much movement around the board - whereas all the other square maps require you to start in one corner and work your way out.

So untill more map makers make maps with something similar to the Kam / Alaska across the board link, I'll be playing mostly 1 map and playing it with a card set up that avoids stalemate.

*Note: Marvs Philippines map with the inter-connecting Ports is the only new map that allows across map movement*

Agreed on the cards thing. When I first joined I thought flat rate was the only way forward, but it always ends up in the old stalemate, and no cards often ends up with just endless fortification (like here), so escalating is definitely my favourite now.

But I do try to have at least a few flat rates and one or two no cards going, and I like to vary between terminator and standard, and all the different fort types and most of the maps.

And even the odd team game... so yeah, variety is the spice of risk.

use to play freestyle quite a lot, but with my working hours and playing north americans, i was getting wiped out nearly. so i decided on playing sequential, flat rate and unlimited mainly. on world 2.0 map i would recommend escalating, because it`s so big you need them.

i don`t do team games, as when i first joined i played 1 with a noob like me and he missed 2 goes and didn`t fight 2 other goes. then we were wiped out in about 5 rounds.

i like to stick to maps i seem to do well in,like Tamriel, middle earth,USA,classic, europe,British Isles and now world 2.0 map.i`ve won on ccu as well, played about 13 or 14 different maps, but deffinately not the crossword or circus maximus.
