the over use of GG

Postby Pedronicus on Fri Nov 17, 2006 7:19 pm

I was in a game today where it was lost by some arse wipe (team 3 -on his own - his team mate was killed in the earlier round) attacking my remaining team mate (I was dead) when team 2 had both of their players in play and looking commanding (and they won it- team 2)

then FP goes and says GG all when the schmuck in team 3 fucked up the whole game.

Can we all please stop saying GG all when not everyone was playing a good game.

It would mean more if people complimented the people who played well - instead of 'generalising' that everyone played a blinding game.

All you're doing is belittling the term Good game & making idiots think they did well - when in fact they played like a twat.

I never say GG to anyone unless it was a GOOD GAME. Maybe this is why FP has over 100 positive feedbacks - because everyone thinks he's a nice guy. (and he is)
But what I'm trying to get across - is that not every game is a good game... lots are ruined, and just winning the damn thing doesn't mean you need to be polite.
win a game. then tell them what you thought of their tactics. if they were shit - tell 'em. people might play better if they were educated. forget neg / pos feedback. This is war!

The phrase "gg all" applies to ONLY those that played a GOOD GAME and it is more of a formality than actually applauding their gameplay, though I tend to agree that it is a bad habit I have gotten myself into .. maybe I should start pointing fingers more instead and saying "don't you know how to play"? Pooling for opinions here...

I do GG All across the board to express personal satisfaction achieved by a fellow warrior, some people play very well some people just plain out suck but we all meet on the battlefield in CC.That's my opinion 8)

I think writing "gg" at the end of a game is simply common curtacy.

I have to agree with Corner G. Saying gg is like shaking someones hand after a European football match(soccer) or tennis, or baseball, or American football, or even bowling/chess. Its just there to promote good sportsmanship.
If the name of the game were to be brutally honest, i dont think many would be open to playing for fun if they stood the chance of being ridiculed.

I think what pedro was trying to get across, is purposely insulting the other team by saying gg. I.e. a team gets absolutely creamed in a soccer game, and they know it. And the other team says gg just to piss them off.

That's no fun.

Well in theory I agree with Pedronicurse, the Ranky Hapster.....I never put it in with people that have pissed me off...on the other hand, if it is a normal (non-pissing off) game, if they have chatted with me, I'll put it in or a simple Thanks or some other such nicety...if they have ignored me in the chat the whole game I'd just as soon poke em in the eye with a stick...but there goes my wanting to enjoy the experience thing again.....

I've recently started using the term "C'est la guerre" when I really don't want to say "Good Game"...

I think it more accuratly states how I feel about that game. It really only takes 1 bad player to ruin it, and there may be others that played very well. War is not always fair. Just look at Hannibal, he played it better but lost in the end to the Romans. "C'est la guerre".

Wikipedia: "C'est la guerre", which means "This is war", would likewise best be interpreted as "Such is war.", inferring "This is just the way war is"

GG

Postby Scarus on Sat Nov 18, 2006 12:36 am

I don't know. It just seems like saying 'gg' is a traditional way of saying thanks for the game.

If you have issues with the way someone has behaved perhaps some modification would be appropriate. i.e. gg asswipe...lol

to say or not to say?

Postby DIXIE on Sat Nov 18, 2006 1:14 am

I usually say GG if I put someone out,,if not,,then if I know them, they are a bud of mine of course a GG is coming but other than that I don't,,because you know sometimes people DONT play a GG ,some really mess it up for everyone  I totally get where Pedro is coming from and I was in the game he's talking about and the guy did make a move or 3 that made me wonder... esp being without his partner,,I'm not gonna complain tooooo much,,me and FP got a win ,,but if i was on Gen Mayhem and Pedro's end I can see the complaint and I am rethinking the whole GG criteria. :?

One more point of interest on that game ... the person that made the questionable moves is a Major, so it wasn't like it was a ? or a Private. Just tossing another log on the fire. :D

What I'm trying to say is that the overuse of gg leads it to mean nothing in the long run.

it's exactly the same as people giving back positive feedback after receiving positive feeback.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not some miserable old git who never gives +feedback / compliments people when I've seen them play a blinding game. But sometimes a game requires no gg just because you're being polite. How about Thanks for the game
The other use of GG which infuriates me is when someones killed (including first 1-3 killed players), and the person that kills them then writes gg.

Was it a good game played by that person? - I mean - If you just killed them, they must of been playing a bad game to be in the position where they were killed early in the game. Maybe they had bad dice / position etc. but sometimes being killed and then being told gg is like rubbing salt in the wounds as nowdays gg is the normal thing to write.

All I'm saying is - compliment a player when they deserve it & keep the compliments REAL.

Tradition is partly to blame I would say. After a bit of deliberation, it looks like I'll need to amend my ways a bit, but will people not like me then? :P I have a few people on CC that don't like me already, but that's alright by me. Good point, Pedro.

i feel that if we got out of the habit of just typing gg, regardless of how the game went and gave some constructive feedback in game chat, it would lead to better relations, better games and a better cc experience.

Your experience of human nature differs from my own. Unless worded very well people tend to take critism whether constructive or otherwise as a huge insult to their ego. Whilst I take Pedro's point - in truth gg is really just saying thanks for a good game. If the person has smack talked or the game has not been enjoyable I personally wouldn't put gg - because it hasn't been :)

I understand what pedro is saying and I do agree with him, however, most players are not going to type in a few sentences or words about thanks for playing, or take care, nice playing with you, that was a fun game, bla, bla, bla, most are still going to just type GG, it is easy, short, to the point, and yes some do type this in to rub salt in the wounds and it is unfortunate, perhaps this thred will clean some of that up to a minor improvement, and if it does, great, and if not, well, we are just going to have to accept it.

I don't know....this is something I never really thought about. I try to be polite and say Good Game (especially if by some miracle I win), but I don't always say it. By the same token, though, I usually say Good Luck at the beginning, but I don't usually mean it. What I'd rather say is something like "I hope all your dice rolls suck!" ...but that would hardly be polite.
