So we are looking to include a sitewide chat in the next update, and there are two candidates: IRC and Gabbly. We'd like to invite you to try them out and let us know which you think would be better:

IRC Chat

Characteristics: Runs in a java applet. More powerful and more complex. A big thanks to mrdexter for getting this up and running!

Demo IRC in the main window: ...
Demo IRC in a popup: ...

Gabbly Chat

Characteristics: The simple one. You can click on someone's name to silence them.

Demo Gabbly in the main window: ...
Demo Gabbly in a popup: ...

EDIT: deleted links. demo is over. thanks for the input.

I voted for gabbly main window.... Hoping that you'll make a tab for it up top by rules and contact.. probably in between club forum and rules.. that says "club chat"

I need to try IRC. Gabbly would be better in a main window than the pop-up though.

well the only difference I see is the option for private chat on the IRC, which is good for people w/o IM or MSN or whatever. I voted IRC popup, just b/c popups are easy to arrange for multiple chats.

Gabbly sometimes wont work for my comp. When I hit enter it goes down a line rather than entering.

Alright, I went through each of these forums for a little while and from what I could gather in that short time was that, While the Gabbly is definately more user friendly, the irc has more features, and once you get used to using it will become just as easy to use. On the topic of whether it should be in a pop-up or not, I found that both are easier to manage if in a pop-up window. This is my opinion, take it or leave it.

I definitely vote for the IRC popup. I can use my infamous /me 'trout smack' command!

FYI, those of you with characters in your name, e.g. reverend_kyle, will not be able to access IRC at this point until the coding is changed to allow for your weirdness. We hope to get that fixed sometime soon, so be patient and hold off voting until you can try them both out. Thanks! 8)

Haha. Weirdness... I like them both.

reveredn_kyle I have just spent the last hour trying to sort out the issue with your username on this FREE software that some woman wrote, in her own time, a couple of years ago. It is now twenty to one in the morning, my missus has gone bed in a huff and I read your first post saying you've voted gabbly despite not being able to try IRC. That made me mad.

Then, suprise SPAM surprise you just had to post again. To criticise. To complain. Well, at least I now can go to bed knowing you're grateful for the effort put in to fix this issue for you.

In the first post I voted thinking that we weren't supposed to be able to chat in them because they were demos... not knowing that it was my problem...

The second post was me teasing.. no offense intended and I DO appreciate the effort you are putting into this.

So the purple text is commands you set to automatically do when "blank" happens?

PostPosted: Sun Sep 17, 2006 6:56 pm
by wicked
no, they're IRC commands you can type in to make the text appear that way

Lack, there seems to be an issue on gabbly with people disappearing from the list of users, or sometimes appearing twice.

Seconded

Ya i'm unignorable  IRC is better in the pop up.

another difference noted... IRC allows emoticons (you just have to type them), whereas Gabbly does not.

BOTH have ignore features.

i like the simplicity of gabbly. IRC takes 2 minutes for my cpu to start, while gabbly starts within 10 seconds.

YEY Irc is being considered! This rocks. I already have an account setup and everything and I can be on lotrr chatroom and cc's at the same time.

I voted for IRC in the main window, but I actually prefer the popup.

I should have tried them before I voted.

I'm not sure I understand this.

It really didn't come across that way. It came across as being bitchy and impatient. Anyways, no offence taken :-)

I thought we were supposed to be able to see this but not be connected, and not chat because it says demo.. I thought the one we could chat on was coming.. little did I know that it was just me.
