RL and the Freestyle Game

One interesting thing I've noticed is how the Freestyle option affects gameplay and strategy. Beyond the fact that you don't have to wait for each player to take a turn--the fact that you can take your turns in any order, at any time. This adds a whole extra dimension to gameplay not found in sequential games: timing.

It wasn't until I joined my first Freestyle game that I realized that Conquer Club was about to envelop my life (it's too late now, no need to mourn for it). I found myself driving home at lunch to see if I could take my turn yet, because I just had to take that turn before I lost the continent. Late nights, surfing the web aimlessly, hitting "refresh" repeatedly on the CC tab...

Even in sequential games, RL has a small effect on strategy, in that you need to be able to take your turn in the right 24 hours. But as long as you're able to check the internet once a day, thats no problem. It's in freestyle games that taking your turn at the right time becomes important. Sometimes, you even want to take a turn simultaneously with a player--collecting armies between the beginning of the round, and your opponent's first attack; fortifying your armies into an invading horde's path.

Anyway, I would like to get a discussion going on this aspect of freestyle strategy, and also about how RL affects freestyle, and freestyle can affect your life.

I'm the same way.

After around 50 games I'm starting to get the tricks of freestyle - like you said, playing a final turn, then waiting for another player to start so you can jump in and almost play 2 back-to-back turns, aswell as waiting for escalating cards to get higher in turn 5/6/7 when the auto-cash-ins start, and trying to take the last turn to get the big scores.

It's frustrating when you miss an opportunity or are eliminated because you couldn't physically take a turn, but seizing that moment and storming through the whole map as you eliminate and steal cards - that is why I play this game, I think.

Pure megalomaniac ecstasy.

I went with the closest thing to "We've all known that for a long time already, now shut up".

What is it with forums and the longer standing members having the incessant need to berate newer members for having a discussion that they have already had?

Why not just not participate and let us relative noobs get to your prestigious pedestal in our own sweet time, and not in the hurry you apparently require us?

Nah, I put that last option on the poll on purpose. There are people who like to use forums as a way to make themselves feel big and superior, and I may as well let them. Doesn't do me any harm, and it certainly won't stop anybody from saying what they want to on the subject.

Anyway, I'd like to hear other's input some more, if anybody has anything to say. Did I miss some elements of this? How else can RL and timing come into play?

Since you seem to care, I voted for the third.
