The first poll, ever! Woohoo!

Okay, everybody says that taking over Asia early in the game is suicide, taking over Australia is semi-good, but can't expand, and Europe is too open to too many continents, unless you form a truce.
What do YOU think?
*waits for people to come* Oh, and do leave your comments here.

N. America is relatively easy to defend, especially if you make an alliance with S. America or Europe.

I chose South America, 'cause it's fairly easy to defend, just one entrance over Australia, and you get 3 extra armies instead of 2.
A truce with North America can get South America attacking Africa easily.

Well Africa would be a good continent to conquer, the problem is that you need a truce with Europe. BUt my preffered ones are South America and Oceania.

I'll agree that S. America has the same benefit as Oceania (easy to conquer/defend), but unlike Oceania doesn't force you to try and conquer Asia immediately; you have a choice as to Africa or N. America, and simply mass forces at the other exit. N. America seems like a good bet, except that every time I try it, I always seem to lose somehow... >_<

According to some game theory thing in a game of more than 2 people Oceana is the best place to begin in a game.
Someone I knew did a mathematical study on it once <shrug>

Yea if there are like 3 poeple or more Oceana is the best place to take because it gives you an edge (a.k.a. more armies) but it's only really helpful in the begining of the game when no one is really mass producing troops. The problem is once someone begins to get large amounts of armies per turn, because once that happens it won't matter if you have Oceana or not.

Oceania is definately the easiest to take and hold, and it's less risky. Once you get in there's little chance of anyone killing you. But... it's too safe, and no where near as fun as making an attempted run at north America or Europe.
S. America and South Africa are sorta average in all respects, not too dificult to hold, good positioning etc. Only I never can seem to hold Africa...
I'd say North America's my favourite, but possibly only because I've never made a sucessful game starting at Europe...

I prefer S. America, if I got countries there...
Otherwise I take what I get, but not Asia...

I aim for Oceana or S. America first for obvious reasons, then Africa, then N. America, then Europe, then Asia; in that order. How do I cast my vote in the poll?

Oceania has the best Points/border ratio but the answer really depends on on number of players in game.

well i do just take the one where I have the majority in territories but if I have a choice I go for North America. If the risk pays off it only has 3 borders, so it is easy enough to hold and then it is easy to take South America straight after. Lots of bonus armies too.
However, in no cards games (and some escalating) Oceania is brilliant if you play a defensive strategy. Just keep deploying and usually, everyone just ignores you. You can just build up armies and then sweep through the rest of the world.

I've seen Austrailia win counless times by sitting back and fortifying then exploding out, killing the nearest person and go on from there. Its a pretty good strategy because normally no one can spare troops to reach Austrailia

I've gone for Europe right off the bat in a few games lately when I had all but one or two countries there. It's been working out pretty well, if you get it and hold it you can amass huge amounts of armies. Putting a pile of armies on Greenland to keep someone else from taking NA might make you important enough to keep you from getting attacked. Yes, there are 4 borders, but Ukraina, Southern and Western Europe can easily support each other, so they're not as weak as they seem.

you should have removed the last option - then you could see which continents people really like

I didn't say I use it, but I've been burned by it several times on CC and in the board game

If there's a lot of fighting going on Australia is a really good continent to have, you're out of the way, 2 armies seem not to make much of a difference and noone wants to take Asia anyway.
If the game develops into a stalemate Australia can turn out to be a horrible mistake. You get fewer bonus armies than the others and can only hope they start bashing each other before someone decides that a second continent would be nice.

Australia can work in a stalemate, taking Asia seems to be the ultimate Risk faux pas, but it is an attainable winning strategy.
