It also depends on the cards-format though.
In Escalating you need 'reach' to be able to hunt down and kill people for their cards. That means maintaining a global presence whenever possible.
Also with Escalating the card value quickly becomes more valuable than any continent bonus, so there's less focus on grabbing and holding continents at all cost.
Of course with so many territories and so many continent bonuses, this applis the LEAST to World 2.1... Likely you would need some (small) continent bonuses early on to sustain your presence throughout the map.
I've only played this map ONCE in a flat rate and COMPLETELY hated it.. I did win it in the end but it took forever and then some. I'm never doing that again in flat rate, but may one day give it a shot again in an 8 player - freestyle -escalating..
