First FOW game

Postby DaGip on Sat Nov 03, 2007 3:41 am

I am playing my first FOW game, and everybody just seemed to gang up on me and I am almost dead. I looked through the game log and figured out where everyone was holding territories. Then I posted it in game chat where those players were at...I know it might annoy some people, but since you can figure it out from game log, it isn't considered against any rules is it? I have never played FOW before, but I would think that "ratting" other players positions out would be fine if it helps you survive.

yeah, it's a tactic; you do whatever you can to win. Cheat, steal, set people up for assassinations. You're going for the win, right? I believe by whatever means possible!

However, I don't like FoW games so much. Maybe it's just me needing to know the positions of everyone on the table. But, eh, whatever!

I'd imagined that information brokering would be fine in those FOW games. I mean, it just seems like the obvious tactic (trading information for clemency, or in order to convince other players to cease misguided actions). But I've seen countless game logs already where people start screeching "cheat cheat cheat, zomg j00 is geting teh negz 4 dis"... which seems to be appalling sportsmanship if you ask me.

In answer to your question though, information brokering is surely exactly what these games are intended to promote. Anybody who whinges is probably just upset that they aren't being allowed to sneak their way to a cowardly victory.

Is there an official stance on whether it's acceptable to neg for posting information in the game log in a FOW game?

If i end up getting a neg feed over this, I will never play FOW again. It just seems like the obvious thing to do when the chips are down, and you are trying to stay alive to win the game. I don't consider it poor sportsmanship on the part of the individual who is doing the informing, I mean you have foghorns and lighthouses that tell you where dangers are, right? I mean, I wouldn't ever be ratting on anyone if I was able to hold a territory, but everyone just ganged up on me (probably because of the FOW, and they didn't know who the real threats were)...so I just shouted out to let them know.

It ain't like they couldn't figure it out on their own, but maybe they didn't know how to play FOW, as well? I didn't even know it was a FOW game when I joined, it was a total surprise to me. It didn't take me long to figure out that you can read the game log and see where certain players were at based on their armies received...this kind of obviously gives your position away. So shouting out to save your game is not bad sportsmanship as far as I am concerned, but it is bad sportsmanship on the other guys side to try and make an issue out of it, just because now the weaker player sniffed his territory (ies) out and shouted it to the rest of the players.

I think I finally agree with you on something, Dancing Mustard!

Yeah, exactly...the tactic could be used either way. You can't always trust the information that other players are giving you...good point.

I was just thinking this myself. i think it is ok to tell others, but I think that we should make it known that it is NOT cheating, it is part of the game.

I think as long as someone else can figure it out from game log then it's is fine. although you might get a neg. But I agree that it should be legal, as in remove negs given for that reason

But its the same thing as waiting the last second in freestyle its not cheating but players frown on it... so if they leave a negative feedback for it thats there choice.. Thats there way of saying what kind of player you are and if people don't want to play fog of war the way your suggesting than don't play you... I personally think thats theres no reason you shouldn't be able to but wouldn't be suprised if negatives come from it...

im conflicted, because it something you can get out of the log i want to say remove the feedbacks

but because its something you dont HAVE to do (you can choose not to tell other players believe it or not) i wanna say let the feedbacks go

We shall see if there will be negs left for FOW snitchers. I don't think there will be one left in my case, but I can definitely see it happening. Especially people that love to play the FOW gamestyle and want to not join games with snitches, I am assuming. But beings this is my first FOW game, I think I am just learning...but I would never leave someone a neg for snitching. You have to play your game around this little fact of the game. People are going to snitch you out if they feel it will help their chances of winning, so you have to plan for that. You shouldn't get all butt hurt about it and leave neg feeds...its an allowable tactic, though it might be looked down upon by those who hold the advantage in a game.
