I know of at least three people who've joined as a result of my direct referral. Do I a get a free premium voucher or something?

no. you get 1 month of premium for each person that joins through your referral and buys premium.

if they join but don't buy then all you get is the fuzzy warm feeling of helping this site.

Well its not really, if someone buys premium then it shows there committment to the site. If tey dont buy premium you dont get anything for the simple reason that you couldget anyone to sign up for you just to claim the benefits.
