-----------------------------

@ + + + $

------------------------------

ok if I'm defending $ against @ with three territs in between, and 8 armies total (so one on each spot and 4 extra.) is it better to defend with 2 on each territ or 5 on one space and 1 on the others?

2's
That way you throw the maximum number of dice at each chance (2 9max # for defender))

Depends on what @ is in relation to your 8 overall armies, and what you're defending with $. Sometimes you are better off putting everyone into $, for instance if @ is 7 or 8, you make him go through some ones, leave armies behind to garrison, and by the time he gets to $ (which, for the purposes of this demonstration, is something like siam) it's a 4 on 5... or a 3 on 5.

Giving away territory isn't always a bad thing. Just ask the Red Army. :D

If you are about to be eliminated, then two on each territory improves your odds of survival.

Otherwise, undefended 1's are considered abandoned.

Can't get much more specific than that without all the other game variables pushing into significance.
