Outbox -- User has yet to open your message.

Sentbox -- Once the user has opened your message, it is a recent history of your sent messages. So say if you get a message from someone that didn't quote, and all they said was 'Yes, sure.' You could go look in your Sentbox and see that your original message said 'Do you want a secret alliance?' (Of course, you'd be guilty of rule 2 violation, ;))

Is that meant to happen?

Yes. If you send someone a PM and it's still in your outbox, that means they haven't read it yet. You can delete messages that are still in your outbox.

When it moves to your sentbox, that means they have read it and you can no longer delete it.

No. Once a PM is opened, it can't be unopened. So therefore it can't be sent back to the senders outbox.

Deleted from where? I'll assume you are asking about deleting a message from the senders outbox, and no, the only way to restore it to the recievers inbox is to resend the message.

Yes, I often make a mistake on a PM so I can edit it in the outbox before they see it, great :)

I sometimes regret what I put in an PM. This sometimes happens late at night, and when I am PM-ing a woman.

What happens during that time when you're feverishly editing the PM, desperately deleting the bits that you don't want the other person to read?

Can the other person open the as-yet unedited PM? :?

Yes, if the reciever opens the PM before the edit/delete process is complete, then it'll give you a message that the PM can no longer be edited or deleted.

No, he would have to open them and forward them. I suppose he could forward them without reading it, but he would still have to open it.

at times when I log on, it indicates (2) behind the word "inbox" on the left side of the screen. if I dont read them and refresh my screen, it seems the (2) will go away. I than forget I have messages to read until I actually look inside my inbox and see the messages. Is there a way to keep the (2), or whatever number, highlighted in blue so I dont forget there are messages to read?
