Secret Alliance???

Postby Rocketry on Mon Jul 23, 2007 5:58 pm

If you wish to make an alliance with another player, you ask and confirm in the game chat correct? once this has been done, can you co-ordinate the alliance via PM or live chat?

all opinions welcome

If it's not a doubles or triples game, do it in the game chat.

You'll learn to regret posting statements like that after you've been here for awhile.

i know this is an option but what im really saying is is t against the rules to agree the alliance in game chat and then co-ordinate your stratagy in live chat (For ease of speed)

Well, technically you can ask and agree upon an alliance outside the game chat. As long as you announce it in English in the game chat before it kicks in, it’s technically within the rules (Wicked made a post regarding that a few days ago). It may not be the most popular thing to do, but it’s not a rule violation as such. Once the alliance is announced, you can co-ordinate in anyway you like.

But why on earth would you wanna enter into an alliance? Alliances are gay… :D

Ask in game chat, that one's definite.

Negotiations... tricky one, I think it's ok if the others know that you are negotiating by pm or whatever. Other's will disagree with me on this. My reasoning is that if the others know two players are negotiating they can act accordingly, like not going on attacking sprees but waiting for the results instead, or even start negotiations of their own.

Once you've agreed to the terms however they should be posted in game chat, at least the general terms. Like how long your alliance will last, against which player you have allied, which border you will not be attacking each other across, things like that.
You really don't have to post things like "next turn I will attack from X to Y and weaken player A so that my alliance partner can take territory Y and break As bonus". Even though player A might like an early warning so he can act pre-emptively. "Player A is growing too strong, me and B will try to take him down a few pegs" is enough.

That's a very nice set of personal preferences. I'm sure that other players appreciate it.

However, for the absolute minimum vis-a-vis the prohibition on secret alliances, see Wicked's posts in this thread.

thanks. thats what im having a problem with. the alliance is agreed but while co-ordinating your efforts against a far more powerful person, that person can just read what you have written and defend accordingly.

Also thanks for the link. The words of a mod are enough!!

The details should be posted in the game chat...no one can prove youre doing this or not, but thats what the ignore list and negative feedback is for

you can easily get away with playing that way for a while, im sure many do, but you will rack up the negs ...its really up to you...

you will be blocked if you do it with the same person time after time though

also, if you do it in 5 and 6 player games, you will undoubtedly run across someone who will let everyone know what youre doing, and they will demolish you

personally, planning with another person on the sly in this game would cease to make it a game for me....so I wouldnt waste my time with it...but my best advice is tread lightly

some sites allow full secret alliances though...its immediately obvious who has one, and the game is just becomes a joke... this game is really only at its best when everyone is out for their own benefit, not knowing what the other player will do, hoping its obvious when youre aggressive, when youre passive, and knowing when they will attack, and when they wont

f you can only win by negotiating with other players, you'll never learn how to really play the game, and youll essentially be stuck in limbo anyways....and even if you gain tons of points, many will consider them worthless

ive seen tons of favoritism, secret alliances, and outright cheating in here...doesnt even bother me anymore...i play enough games that I plan to lose some this way and just concede that it will happen....

however, it is the main reason why you only find a handful of top players playing in open games

my best advice, only use alliances when absolutely necessary for a round or two...keep them open and just play the game out...you may lose one or two more, but you will sure as hell have more fun, and create less drama for yourself

I think I've only been offered an alliance one time. During that time though, we had to make all of our intentions known in the game chat. We never privately pm'd each other.
