Mentoring Pilot Program Discussion

Postby Itrade on Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:44 am

How about this: Each of us picks a new member who has joined recently. Then, we find out which games he/she is in, and provide him/her advice. When the new guy gets the rank of corporal, we move on to a new one.

The idea has similiar goals to one jnd94 posted in suggestions previously.

The goal is to have your new guy win more than anyone else's. So you have to keep track about how many games he/she wins and how many he/she loses since you began sponsoring him/her, and then compare them to other new guy sponsorers.

I'll start by sponsoring... General Monkey.

You can look around page 37 of the scores for recruits and new dudes.

So, for the benefit of new recruits everywhere and the entertainment of veterans, let the new guy sponsorship program begin!

New guys requesting mentors/sponsors:
Thantos
CirqueDaddy
Parker4s
Easye
Visaoni
OneManArmy

EDIT: YO LISTEN UP, IT IS IN BOLD SO YOU KNOW IT IS IMPORTANT:
This idea has been way more successful and needs way more work than I thought, so I'm asking wicked if he can find a mod (or mods) willing to manage this. So hold off your offers to mentor and requests for mentoring right now, 'cause there's probably gonna be a new, mod-run thread soon that's gonna be more organized and stuff.

EDIT 2: AGAIN IN BOLD, AND ALSO RED. OH YES, IT IS THAT IMPORTANT:
The new thread is in! http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=575112 is the link. Go there to ask for mentors or mentees, and discuss the program here.

I don't think it's stalking, it's just being kinda creepy on the internet. But everyone is kinda creepy on the internet, so I think they'll be okay with it.

Um, for those of you that are in, go to page 37 of the scores, find a new recruit, and use the game chat to give him/her tips on the game chat. I've got a head start on you all so get sponsoring.

This is a good idea, but I'd like to get the new recruits to agree to this before people go stalking their games. Not everyone wants help. Perhaps direct them to this thread and see how that works? If it's popular, perhaps we can make it an official thing.

I would definitely be willing to provide some helpful guidance, but like wicked (and others) have mentioned, I'd rather not go stalking people. Besides, the new recruit that seeks out such a program will be far more willing to learn than someone who all of a sudden sees some stranger PMing them and posting in game chat bossing them around...

Perhaps if this ever gets real following, there can be a link on the instructions page, sort of a 'if you're interested in receiving tips and tricks from a wily veteran, click here to join the Adopt-A-Recruit Program' thing.

Heh, AARP. I made a funny.

A recruit jumped into my game, so I just asked him if he wanted a mentor. He was only too happy.

other than the above of course, there seems to be a lot of willing mentors but very few new recruits

can we advertise this any better?

Make a new discussion called "NEW RECRUITS FALL IN HERE!"

And have them put their names, so the people here can link up.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa. Who-oah.

Nobody said anything about PMs. That is going too far. Just post in their games, give them advice (Not forcefully like "YO NOOB TAKE AUSTRALIA DO IT", just more like "If I were you I'd try for Australia, it's pretty easy to defend for a decent bonus"), and if they ask why you're helping them you link them here, but if they ask you to stop you just do and find a new recruit.

I think the point being made is that no one wants to waste their time on someone who either doesn't want the help, doesn't need the help, or doesn't even plan on returning to the website... whereas if there was a mechanism in place for shunting ambitious new recruits to a centralized place where they could be paired off with a mentor of sorts, that's win-win for everyone.

Also, bear in mind that just because someone's a new recruit, that doesn't mean they've never played risk. I'd have been pissed if someone came into one of my first few games and said 'hey, you might want to take australia', because my immediate response would have been along the lines of 'no shit, sherlock.'

Not all recruits are the same. I'm just saying that picking them at random seems like a crapshoot.

As it seems no real noob has posted here, I might as well be the first.

Personally, I'd like to see the thing handled how a few others have suggested, where there is maybe a link somewhere if this grows, or at the very least just a sticky on the forums where mentors and recruits can go to sign up for the whole thing.

While I am more than willing to listen to advise (the last time I played Risk on a board I must have been 6 or 7) if somebody randomly messaged me it would just be... well, kinda strange. If they were charismatic enough I'm sure it would go well, but frankly not many people can pull that sort of thing off - there is a reason why some people are amazing salesmen and others work in a cubicle and rarely talk to anybody. Somebody popping into a game or whatnot would probably be fairly well received, but it would still seem a little odd.

Besides, from the mentor's point of view, it would be easier to find somebody that actually wanted to listen to advise. Nobody wants to waste their time, and this way the mentors could be much more sure that this person really wanted their help, and it wasn't just a sort of "Oh they offered. I guess I could use it." sort of thing. It would be more of a "Crap. I kinda suck at this. Could I please get some help?" thing if the recruits actually had to do something to become part of this program, even if it is as simple as clicking a few times and writing a short post.

Well this has certainly gone on much longer than I intended so I will stop here.
