Doubles Strategy

Postby riggable on Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:52 pm

When i play doubles, usually i pick a continent to hold and my partner picks a seperate one and then we work together with our added bonuses to attack the enemy. This has worked pretty well - were undefeated in a doubles tourney so far- but recently i've come across another strategy where a team doesn't worry about bonuses in the beginning and stacks both player's armies onto one spot, and then attacks into a territory once either me or my teammate establish control over that.

Which is a better tactic, and how exactly do you utilize the second tactic to be a effective one?
any information would be wonderful.

A good strategy for playing a team thats stronger than your team is ahve one of your teammates attemt to take the biggest continent on teh board (Asia on Classic, Congo on Africa, Canada on N america, etc)

Then have that player retake the continent every turn. Your opponents will be busy breaking your teammate and you can clean up everywhere else.

I've always tried to make sure that one of us has a small continent to build from. However, I recently found a pretty different but effective strategy. My lie was terrible, or so it seemed, so I had little choice but to go for Europe. My teammate forted almost everything he had into me and on one turn I managed to hold it. Bingo! The game was over - I smashed the guy in South America and gave my teammate the armies to do some damage to the guy in Oceania. Therefore, I think that large continents are actually takeable in doubles where they are not in singles.

Seen many other effective strategies though where guys have given all their armies to their teammate to take out one of the other players and then tranfer them all back again to the other player in the team. This may be the most effective strategy, as long as one of you is not likely to be eliminated because of it

I've tried several different ways for doubles, and my partner and I have had average success I would say.

I am not a big fan of the piling armies on one territory plan, it has never seemed to work that great. I have noticed that passing a bunch of armies to a teammate on the first turn or so can be extremely detrimental as well. I've noticed that waiting a turn or two has helped in some games.

I, for one, stand by the tried and true strategy utilized by many generations of Risk fans.

Win.

In all seriousness, though, I usually give almost all my stuff to my partner in dubs and go for the continent that works the best to hold for myself, and then it's crunch time.

go after small stuff first (SA, OC) and then, go from there.
IF you get 8 per turn, and your opponents get 6 per turn, you're already at an advantage.
Me and my partners are also fans of "pass/ attack" methods, and that has really helped!
You have to find a comfy median for yourself, find what you like, and what works for you, and stick with it.

Best doubles strategy: talk to each other.

Otherwise it depends on your game type. No cards games, grab the bonuses early on. Flat rate, soak up the other guys attacks and then both cash in to knock them back (and possibly take one opponent out) with 20-30 army deployments. Freestyle? Sync your turns.

YMMV

I am certainly no expert on team games, but generally I prefer a teammate to hunker down on a continent, while I do a rolling mass of armies to break up other team's continents, with support to teammates when there is no immediate consolidation by the other teams.

there are a few steps u should follow during dubs games

1- the player to attack next from ur team should have more armies then u do

example:ur team has a total of 60 armies ur teammate has to have 70-80% of those armies or atleast as much as u can...without leaving ur self too thin to be taken out...then on his go he uses the armies for attacks and then forts u back the rest..

2-always look for the weakest player on the other team and work a way to eliminate him as fast as u can (round 3-4 max) if u have a chance of eliminating or to break the other teams bonus always go for the elimination!

3-if its a no cards dubs game...small bonuses can be the diffrent between the 2 teams , if its a cards game sometimes it helps holding a continent sometimes it dont..depends on the drop

4-stick to standard they r much better

8) 8)
