Suiciding to limit points lost?

What is the proper form in a round limit game where you have no chance to win? Should I try to make sure the highest ranking player wins so I lose the least amount of points? Is that how we, as a community, should hope people play? Or should we expect that we allow the player(s) that are winning to win the game?
Example:
Game 15246797I'm winning by about 100 troops going into the last player in the last round. And <player name> goes all out to make sure I do not win so he can lose 5 less points. I get it, it's just a game, but I think this move is pretty low class. Am I over reacting or is this unsportsmanlike?

This community has fought time and again to ensure that all competitive games have points, sanctifying the role of points won in a game and implying that if you're not trying to win the points, that you should essentially not be permitted to play. We have rules that prevent people from intentionally losing points, from dropping out of a game if they're losing, because everyone needs to be trying to win points at all times.
And then people actually complain when someone makes a rational move designed to protect their points?
Sigh.

Thank you Mets! I've already received a PM from redspyder, he's posted in the tournament thread and now he's posting here. This is a competitive game and I had no chance at winning so I minimised my loss. It's called logic. Also, why not just say my name considering you've linked the game anyway?

I am on redspyder side. This is totally unfair.
If LittleMao was your buddy redspyder could go for C and A and have you warned for that.
So close to game throwing.
You are not the first one to do so and not the last one. But I think game should be played with the solely purpose of winning that game. If you can't win it, then your move was bad sport.
Now considering the tournament I am also disapointed, LittleMao is first and you gave him more points! Damn you!

I know, but it was futile.

I'm happy to agree it was unsportsmanlike behaviour and it was selfish. However, competitive games often are. In retrospect I regretted the move because of LittleMao's current position in the tournament, but from a points perspective I don't regret it at all and would make the same play every single time, unless it jeopardised my position in a tournament. Since I was last in that game anyway minimising my points loss was the best thing to do.
Also, I barely know LittleMao, which is pretty obvious.

I'm upset for a few reasons...
1) 89 points swing (I lost 19 when I could've won 72ish points).
2) It knocked me out of the tournament. Where, if I had won, I still could've placed in the top 5 if I did well enough in the Battle for Iraq! game we are both in.
3) After doing the math, the points you saved were minimal:
I had 2366 points before the game ended. Mao had 2505. You had 2770.
Mao wins = 20 * (2770 / 2505) = 22 points
I win = 20 * (2770 / 2366) = 23 points
I was obviously upset at losing a game I thought I had rightfully won. I still don't agree with your play and wouldn't have made the same choice if our roles were reversed, but I appreciate you being civil about it and explaining your reasoning. I'm sure we will play many more games together. Hopefully you can forgive me for making a bit of a scene about all of this.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I would be annoyed if the same happened to me, and it has, but I still understand the reasoning as well. If I stay in the tournament and this knocks you out, then I will be especially pleased with the move.
I didn't study the scores. I saw a Sergeant 1st Class, a Major and a Colonel. I let the highest rank because it was most beneficial for me, regardless of how much of a difference in points, the small amounts count.
You have no need to apologise, but I don't believe I do either. I'm a competitive person in a competitive game. I'm sorry for how annoyed you are about my play, but I'm not sorry for doing it.
