Welcome to the Ghost Zone

Postby BoganGod on Fri Dec 12, 2014 2:51 pm

Hello fellow hungry ghosts and zombies. Thought I would take it upon myself to welcome you to the most lifeless fora in one of the smallest online gaming sites on the net. A fora that used to attract more posts in an hour than we have had all week. Feel free to post, even just one word to puncture the silence.

I started this thread after seeing I was the last to post in this fora, 7hrs before. 7hrs with no posts......... Tumbleweeds roll by.

The pain and the sorrow. We come to the net to escape that, not be reminded of what was, by only glimpsing a shadow of the been in the now.

i remember, way back when, when this forum rocked... i would wake up, get some coffee, start reading the forums... and it could literally be an hour or an hour and a half before i even started thinking about turns... there was so much to read and catch up on, and i'd save flame wars for a good drunken night... sigh... you used to have to check in two or three or four times a day or you'd fall WAY behind... a thread could start and hit page 5 within an hour to two... ahhhh... on the flip side, i guess we can thank andy and the fake hyrasi dude for giving us more time in our real lives...-Jésus noir

i miss the old forums...

*DOUBLE GHOST ZONE POST*

you know... one of the reasons i started posting again, was because a lot of the posters i just could not stand, drifted away... then i would come to the forum and see it sit idle for 2-3 days without a post or with fewer than 5 posts... it was just so hard to look at it and remember how it used to be... so i started posting... i thought, "instead of bitching and moaning about what past admins did to destroy the forum, why not just post and not be part of the silence? why let THEM win?"... so, i started posting again... it isn't like i saved the forum or am trying to save the forum, i just don't want to let THEM win and will continue to post until it just isn't possible to post anymore...-Jésus noir

NEVER, never, NEVER, never...

I'll bite here....just tossing out a thought. Do you think that all of the forum archives drive away new posts? tons of stuff has been batted around in the forums. and hopping on and doing a search generally provides a decent answer. I'm guessing this reduces the number of new posts people feel the need to create....

yeah... sure... people just do a search for a random discussion and choose to read what was said 1,2,3,4 or even 5 years ago... that makes absolute sense to me... *eyes rolling right out of my black jesus skull*... the black jesus has dismissed your comment...-Jésus noir

Well, perhaps it is the way you treat people then, owenshooter.

I hop on with a legitimate suggestion, and instead of trying to create some dialogue, you choose to be snippy. I'm not overly sensitive about the whole thing, but I can tell you that a lot of people would prefer not to be treated like that and probably would not spend a lot of time in the forums.

Maybe some people do not read what was said 1-5 years ago, but I DO. I have read a lot of the old forums discussing strategy on various maps. Whether written yesterday or five years it is still applicable. And instead of me hopping on and starting a thread asking for advice on a map I haven't played yet, a quick search generally gives me the info I want.

On virtually every thread I see people getting flamed and I think to myself "this is probably why people don't post that much anymore." And that's a shame.

I have not been on CC nearly as long as you have...or as long as a lot of the people on here. I don't remember the glory days of the forums... I'm sure that during days like that you could be sarcastic, and belittling, and snippy, and all of that stuff....and people probably enjoyed it and knew that it was just good old ribbing. But in order to get to that point again, you have to get people to the forum and then ENGAGE THEM.

I have read enough posts from Owenshooter that I get it. I'm not offended and my skin needs no thickening.

Perhaps "flaming" wasn't the proper terminology, Owen. I wasn't trying to insinuate that you were doing anything worthy of a complaint. And I never suggested that your words offended me. My secondary point was (is) simple. If you want people to feel welcome participating in the forums, then try being NICE TO THEM. Try ENGAGING WITH THEM! I know, it's kinda crazy. Berate them, make fun of them, tell them their thoughts are not worthy because they are a noob, or whatever...and odds are they won't feel as comfortable posting. Simple as that.

And I stand by my primary SUGGESTION. In fact, I even phrased it as a question. I'm not married to the idea, but I think it has some merit for consideration: "Do you think that all of the forum archives drive away new posts?"

I don't have a relationship with very many people on this site. i don't hop on the forums throughout the day to have discussions with friends. But I DO search the forums when I'm curious about things. And generally, I find an old thread, and read it. If that weren't possible to do, would I post a new thread about it? I'm not sure, but I think that it is at least plausible. And once that happens, and one starts to get to know more people, they start using the forums for other things....probably the more social aspects that you all miss.

Again, just a suggestion. Feel free to dismiss it owen...

I don't know if the forum archive keeps people from posting more now, hayesez. The archives do slow down the site, so some of it could be trimmed, certainly. And yeah, if some of the bite in Questions & Answers and Strategy were removed, people would have to ask those questions again, but it seems like we'd lose a lot of good info that way. I for one wish the Strategy forum were more active. There are so many maps out there without guides, and a lot of the guide writers have left.

Guides/cheat sheets. Useful I know, have used in the past. Feel takes/reduces some of the romance and thrill of learning/mastering a new map.

i made that exact suggestion, to update the strat guide and was told pretty much to do it myself... anyone can do it... blah, blah, blah... that seems like it is essential for the site with the glut of maps...-Jésus noir

Yup, probably pros and cons to the guides. Since I have been playing I have just slowly been learning new maps...it wasn't until the official CC triples tourney came out that I started doing some digging in the forums. We have 19 different maps this round, and I knew that some of them (ie. Das Schloss / Antarctica) had very specific strategies that probably needed to be followed. Searching threw the archives I found several threads on each, and was able to piece together the basic strategy for the maps.

Maybe the archives don't keep a lot of people from posting...and I would never like to see them go, but they have kept me from reaching out for strategy help on some maps.

How does strategy guide writing work? Random21 and I have at least kicked around the idea of writing one for new USA 2.1. Is there a process one goes through to write the guides?

If your a douche and have a funny coloured name, you could write a guide. Sticky it in the wrong forum, and get it critiqued that way! Otherwise if you happen to be a normal person(that just happens to play a nerd game on a dwindling site) just send macbone a pm. :) He/she is remarkably helpful.
