You should play any and every setting instead of trying to protect your rank by only playing familiar game types.

I'll play almost any map. In fact, I play every map except the 5 that I really can't bear to look at.

I don't like to play more than 1 game at a time on any particular map. I think it helps me remember my strategy from turn to turn - I don't deploy my armies and then remember "oh, it's the other game of Siege! where Teal is vulnerable there..."

As for style, I'll play any type but I can see prefs developing:
Escalating cards Victory seems too dependent on getting sets - you pull a big payout and it can tromp all over someone's skillful play. I'm choosing more and more fixed and cardless games.
Freestyle I like the speed but I've already posted a rant about its problems.
Doubles Haven't played one yet, I expect it would be good. I like that it creates a place to play for people who want to ally - keeps the other games mostly everyone-for-themselves.

well said ............

I like fixed sets for the reasons you mentioned escalating sets can determine game all by themselves

I like freestyle but the problem is people sometimes take two turnss back to back before you take yours...in the case where you have a border dispute this can really change the game

I ll play anything but prefer certain maps since i get slaughter on all new maps at first

Escalating games

I think you guys are completely wrong about escalating games as in my view there is a bigger skill factor though of course the way the cards fall does hugely influence the games. The problem is that many people simply dont know how to play this variation and waste cashes on taking continents rather than eliminating opponents and getting their cards. It amuses me that people complain about getting beaten by somebody who just got a large draw - are you all blind - can you not see who is likeky to cash and strategise accordingly. To my mind this sure as hell beats flat rate games that either end up in 100 round stalemates or are decided because of a hotch potch of alliances against a player who probably had shown more skill than the others in the first place.
As for the original point I play largely Classic in all variations including doubles/triples and I favour escalating and now rarely play terminator. I am starting to play a few of the other maps for variety but it is an expensive business learning the ropes so am treading with care.

have to agree with my comic friend as escalating needs skill....i mean if it wasnt about the skill we would be all at the same rank right?

Luck is a big factor too...after missing a kill with 1 country left thats were luck interferes to change ur game situation from winning to losing and the guy who won from losing to winning but escl. is about skill...cards...motivation..

Cheers

the point isnt whether it involves skill or not but simply that escalating reduces the game to nothing but taking cards so that you can obtain a rolling set.

It misses the point of risk really IMO i mean the continental bonuses are there for a reason but in an escalating game most people dont even bother with them.

I just played a high ranked game of escalating the only continent anyone even tried to take was s am and the rest of the game consisted of blocking the next player to cash from taking someones cards.

I am not saying winning this way doesnt take skill but I would rather play a game where i take and defend a bonus then expand my area and eliminate my opponents one by one than a game where i split my men between 3 continents and try to survive til i can cash a set and kill someone with 4 or more cards in same round

just a difference preference and i believe it s closer to what the games originators intended

ummm , in escl.... u better not try for a conti....not too late and not too early in the game...so what i do is this I NEVER TRY FOR A CONTI , it will mean i am going to have to be worried defending my borders while other players are taking over all the good spots leaving me alone in my little conti or big who cares...so word of advise dont try for a conti in any escl. game + i never do attack a conti over borders unless the holder holds more then 2 contis...i am not the best..its just my point of view work by it ... too many ppl have graced me for my word of advise

I understand that and I play escalating games occassionally just did one maniac invited me too I just was saying my preference is for flat rate card variation because i think its truer to the original intent of the game.

However I believe escalating to be the dominate form of play among alot of players ....its just a different evolution of the game with different goals and stratdegies (<---how the hell do you spell that ?)

I keep one game going for each map. When it ends I start/join a new one for that map. Settings vary wildly however and I'll play almost anything. Every weekend I update stats on my performance based on map and game settings.

Best map for me: USApocalypse (not my fave design, but most wins)
Worst: Classic (go figure)
Best setting: SFFC, five players

Least important setting: Fortification type
Most important setting: Order (freestyle is *much* better)

And yes, I am a nerdly nerd nerd-man, in case there was any doubt.
