The Decline of 8 Player Freestyle Speed Games

In recent history, 8 player Freestyle speed games were a staple of CC game play.

These games were intense, competitive and fun. On any given day it would be easy to join in many of these games and there was a thriving pool of players participating in them.

In 2009 the brilliant people that run this site decided to dismantle the Freestyle format, despite the objections form the people that actually played Freestyle.

At the time I stated that the change would ruin Freestyle and that FS would wither into nothing. Was my prediction correct?

From 2008-2009 there were 40,000 (8) player Freestyle speed games played

From 2009-2010 there were 28,000 (8) player Freestyle speed games played (20,400 played before changes, 7700 after)

From 2010-2011 there were 15,800 (8) player Freestyle speed games played

From 2011-2012 there were 13,900 (8) player Freestyle speed games played

From 2012-2013 there were 3900 (8) player Freestyle speed games played

From 2013-2014 there were 1000 (8) player Freestyle speed games played

So far this year there have been a total of 89 (8) player Freestyle games played

The last 8 player Freestyle speed game played was over 1-1/2 months ago on 5/29.

Congrats to CC for totally fucking up Freestyle =D> =D> =D> =D>

I don't play those settings at all (they sound horrible). But what is it that changed that keeps those players away?
Those declines started well before the current admin.
Lag complAints are more recent then the declines.

Shed some light or link to those old posts that detail some of the negative changes?

People are still playing 8-player FS terminator and assassin all the time. You might only be searching for standard.

He is speaking about SPEED game.

Why were you looking at standard? The OP didn't say anything about standard. I found 103243 freestyle speed 8 players games.

In 2009 the brilliant people that run this site decided to dismantle the Freestyle format, despite the objections form the people that actually played Freestyle.

What happened in 2009, what was the change?

Isn't the decline concerning all speed game and not only freestyle speed game? I don't know how you find number of games per year so I couldn't research this myself. But my impressions is that there is a decline for all speed game.

It is a decline in all speed games, for sure. The canary in the mine were the 8p fs classic games which were *awesome*, but depended on a bunch of good, committed fs players. Then we went down to 6p doodle fs, which was fun for a while. Not as good as the 8p classic, but still pretty good. Then all you were left with was assdoodle which always sucked balls, but fun if you're in the mood and don't care about your points. Now there's nothing.

I understand that. I searched for speed games and found some that had been played the same night that I posted, so I incorrectly assumed that this has been happening continuously. But it looks like he is right, before that spate of games, the ones before that were a long time ago.

All speed games are in decline and it's for various reasons.

There is a certain elite that plays certain games and it turns other people off. Sorry, but it's true.

Recently enough, I decided I was bored and I'd play some speeders standard poly. I set to 5 minutes because I am not used to speed (maybe it was 3 mins, I forget). A moron joined my game. He was just super fast like he was playing freestyle. That wasn't an issue, but he started complaining about me taking the fun out of the game by not being fast enough. I got annoyed. Not only did he get great dice, but was acting like a total asshat. That was it for me. He had it won, so I wasn't going to waste my time anymore dealing with morons so I told him congrats, he's a better player than me, deadbeated and let him have his victory. That one is foed. I just can't bear to play with people like that. He took the fun out of it for ME, so I just left to do something else. If people are going to be total dickheads, how are others supposed to learn, or enjoy the settings. They complain about not enough people playing them, and then they bitch when new people try it out. That's just my own personal experience. Normally, I would play speeders with friends so this wouldn't happen.

Regular fs players do tend more to the asshat side of things, it's true. And it doesn't help - they also tend to foe often and easily, which again didn't help in filling games. I think some of those people are learning that that attitude just contributes to the death of fs speed games which is good, but I think it's too little, too late.

Agreed with DF, freestlye games were ruined by the site.

They were the type of games I used to enjoy the most, in fact basically the only game type / mode that the dice had litle bearing on.

Made for a more enjoyable fast paced strategic game.

I hate this site, and myself for still participating.

Freestyle speed definitely reduces the impact that dice have.

Why do I need to answer this? Go to the fucking forum search and look for yourself. I'm not going to do it for you.

dear lord, i went to hit reply and even THAT button did a funky flip scroll move... anyway, as the site continues to be ruined, i realized how narrow my vision of this phenom is... i am limited to only the areas i visit and the types of games which i play... it is fascinating to me to realize that other people are having equally troubling experiences with the site, that to me, are not even visible... wow...-el Jesus negro

I don't think he's the one who cares about FS speed decline.
As the one openly complaining about it, and the changes made before the current admin, and not playing it personally some of us aren't aware of the apparently awful changes that apparently have killed an entire section of play.

So the logical thing to do would be ask someone familiar with the changes.

But I guess if the goal is to complain and not be heard, I'll leave you to your thread then ;)

Do I believe that if the current admin were to undo the changes to FS that the previous admin implemented that the magic that was lost would return? Nope. The format is dead.

Obviously the point of this thread has escaped you. The blind changes that the previous admin made without thinking any of them thru (despite the feedback from the people that would be affected by the changes) had a detrimental impact on the site.

Do you think that history maybe repeating itself? Do you think that the current admin is doing the same fucking thing?

Furthermore, it's pretty pathetic that the current admin doesn't know how to navigate the forums to find out what historical changes have been implemented.... I'm pretty fucking sure that there in an entire section of the forum dedicated to this very thing.

It is a clear decline in All speed games. I see maybe 10 games going at a time, not all the time, but it is a lot slower than previous years.

Trying to find out issues people have and resolve them is a bad attitude?
I look for threads like this to find out how things can be improved.

I'm not saying it would be changed, I'm trying to find out what the changes were in the past.
Could it be changed? Maybe. Maybe not.

Nobody said the admins can't / don't look into the past forum areas. I'm not an admin, I'm just an interested volunteer trying to discuss some of the issues.

If you don't want to go into details that's fine. I was just asking for my own information to find out what happened and why, from someone that knew the history from the time.

Like I said, I wasn't around and it's not an area I've really paid much attention to / settings I've ever enjoyed. So I wouldn't know.

What is that you do not understand? Some evil dictators took control of the site some years ago and did something really bad to the site, we know that because a friend of the cousin of the aunt of my uncle has partially heard about it from a retired astrologist. This obviously lead to the destruction of 8 player freestyle and that is why it is now kept secret so that people will not learn about it and get angry. Is that so hard to understand?

Get rid of the delay for a start. It completely ruins casual freestyle, never mind speed. The most common casual freestyle players are freemiums looking to play 1v1, except when their game is joined they have to wait another hour.

Before all the "they should buy premium arguments come in", they would have been more likely to buy premium if the setting hadn't been cocked up, not once their style of play has been ruined.

I don't know what else has changed for speed freestyle apart from the delays, which aren't the end of the world. It's just dead. Most of the speed freestylers I knew have left the site, or at least the setting. The majority have a certain brash attitude, myself included, and were often in the forums, but since they've gone to crap as well the players aren't around any more.

The typical sequential players that think it's all about internet connection and don't have a clue yet continue to diss freestyle don't help either.

Yes internet connection and speed matter in those setting DUH. But I think the sites lag is a bigger issue. I have trouble playing a 1v1 could only imagine playing 7 players. Or even a 1v1 freestyle.
