can some one explain trench warfare to me

With trench warfare you can only assault from regions held continuously since the start of your turn. If you conquer a region (or re-conquer a region) you cannot assault further from that region during the same turn. Say on the Classic map you hold Sydney. From Sydney you can assault Perth and/or Port Moseby. Say you assault and take Perth advancing all. That is the end of your assaults with those troops , you cannot now go on to assault Jakarta from Perth, nor can you use the troops you advanced to Perth to attack Port Moresby.
