Probably because spots 1, 2 and 5 changed their mind and dropped out of the game.

I did think of that, but once when I accidentally dropped out of a game I'd created, the other player who'd joined got the red spot and I was left with green. This was a few years ago so things might have changed.

However I've noticed that once people decline a game invite, the people who've joined those move up the list to close the gaps, so why would the gaps not still be closed in other games?

No, if you decline an invite or drop a game, that slot is vacant. It's been that way for as long as I can remember, Colin, although it sounds like it was different earlier in CC's existence.

I'm not sure how that can be true. I was invited to Game 13907874. Me and three others declined. I assure you our invite slots were not the last slots on that game. As one by one the invites were declined, everyone including ' 'supermtt6' who had taken one of the now vacant spots moved up the list to leave empty slots in the bottom three positions. Normally (by which I mean in the last couple of weeks since I came back), whenever I look at lists of games to join the only gaps are for reserved slots or for team games. I've never come across other instances before this one!

Incidentally, the game that I created and was the green player on was way back near the end of the seven figure game-number days. Game 9968930 from October 2011 to be precise!

So someone drops out of a game and those now vacant slots are left till the end? Otherwise how else do we explain the final slot having been filled and yet there still being slots available? How come the game I was invited to didn't work like this?

What macbone said is correct as far as I know. I'm not sure what you are talking about perhaps post some screenshots to help explain your unique situations. You can have a final slot filled and have empties if people are invited then drop out just as macbone said.

On a small scale:

3 player game. Player who creates the game invites player 2 and player 3. Player 3 joins...player 2 declines...you have slots 1 and 3 filled and slot 2 is empty.

The slot is only left open if an invite is not accepted. If a player drops a game all the other players waiting move up a slot. Colin is correct.
