The Dominant Player in a Game

Ok this is something I noticed and I wonder does it happen in other people's games too. In the initial stages of a game (especially with manual deployment at the start) if a player gets a good position on the map and becomes clearly the dominant player that other players will avoid them and attack other smaller players. This then leads to tit-for-tat where the smaller players weaken each other while the dominant player just gets stronger.

If there are smart weaker players they will arrange a truce but usually it's too late. Any ideas how I can avoid this or is it just the nature of the game and the only way to deal is either become the dominant player initially or get preemeptive truces?

I never get games like that. But use gamechat as much as possible to work in your interest and other players. Usually getting dominant early in the game is a bad thing as people gang up on you. So i don t know what sort of cook players you play against.

This is the thing they aren't cooks! It just pisses me off when I can see that player x is getting big and has to be checked only for player y to ignore x and take me out meaning that even on my next turn i can't do anything about it and so on.

I prefer not to use gamechat but I guess I will hav to start preemptive truces.

Well it s not cheating to coordinate and truce with opponents for a few rounds if it avoids both of you to lose quick.

I know it's not cheating and I have done it. I just don't like having to talk other players through games especially when I am only new and learning myself. I prefer not to hav ''official truces'' but go it alone. I suppose I would just like to play with intelligent players who can see a few rounds in advance and not do stupid things.

Also I just wanted to see if this was something that happened to others cos it is really something noticeable in games I have played and becoming really annoying.

It always happen. You have to use the chat, there is no choice.
Theoretically you might be right, and the weak one should not be fighting each other, but even when I play with smart player, we use the chat.

There is one reason for that, no one will attack the leader if they are not sure other people will help them.
Let's say you are 4 people. 1 leader 3 small fish. One small fish start attacking the leader, the 2 other watch hoping the leader will go out of the fight weaker and they can take it.
So I usually dont attack the leader if I didnt make sure with the other player I will have some support first.

Anyway, even if there is no clear leader, if you want to win, diplomacy is a powerful tool, you may want to use that one.
