Could someone explain this whole Spamalot thing to me?

I asked what spam was (or at least how it relates to CC) and it was explained that it is responding to a post with something useless. Am I right so far?

Of course, one thing that gets lost in that is that this is often done because the question or original post was so stupid it really deserves no better. Of course, in this case, I'm not sure it should be thought of as spam.

For instance.

You post: The dice are rigged, I always lose despite the fact that I'm a great player and would be undefeated but for the fact that I've never rolled a 6.

I post:

Is this spam?

Sorry, I digress. I only assume that spamalot has something to do with spam (big reach, really) and thus was a little subset of CC of people who, for some reason, thought making useless posts was fun. Did they get their own forum or something? Did this forum turn into the war of the flies where these people, fleeing the oppressive censoring found in the main boards devolve into anarchy?

Really, what is the issue? Does there need to be a special place on a website designed for on-line world domination games for people to make posts with nothing but emoticons?

Is that what all this hand wringing is about?

You're missing the point. The spamalot guys are upset because they were deceived into believing that they could run their small community without any harm, and one day someone comes in and deletes their hang-out place. They were not warned that Spamalot was in danger of deletion, as a proof - they got to 1000+ pages before anyone decided to take action.

I'm afraid this might evolve into Flaming, so I'm sorry, but I'm going to lock this. Lack, the rest of the mods, and I are discussing the issue so stay tuned. Refer to one of the other Spamalot topics.
