Of course there are common abbreviations, like referring to Oceania as Oz on the Classic map, or abbreviating South America to SA, but do you have any pet names that aren't really abbreviations?
For instance, I was just writing a "note to self" reminding myself to attack Alto Pantabla next turn (in a foggy game on the Brazil map) and I wrote it Alto Paranoia like I always do. I realized I've been writing Alto Paranoia for so long that I couldn't remember any more what the actual name of the tert is, so I scrolled up to check and it's Alto Pantanal, and it just made me wonder if there are other tert names that people have pet names for, that they've been using for so long they forgot what the real name of it is.

First map that comes to mind for me is Mongol Empire.
Kashgar = The Cash Bar
Idiqut = Idiot
Keraits = Carrots
Merkits = Meerkats
Uigur = Igor (or eye-gore)

I superimpose modern names over ancient pseudonyms.
Seljuq Sultinate of Rum = Turkey
Treverorum/Burdigala = France
And so on...

mostly abbreviations, like using wa1 and wa2 in Das Schloss. and i call the territories in the bottom left parachutes even though the parachutes are the ones with people's names.

I think for the Classic map, I still think of the old terminology, instead of the updated city terminology. So this is like a pet-name, but not to the real extent like some of the examples in this topic!

Predominantly on Berlin 1961
Charlotte, Nikkers, Spandex, Siemenstains, Pancake and Friedrice.
Something Freudian there perhaps - fantasy and food.

i usually use abbriviation, but for chinese regions i also use nicknames to make them easier to write/remember.
for example:
Xanjiang = Jinjang
Shanxi = hansy
Machuria = manicure
Heilongjiang = hello kitty
Liaoning = Lion king
Guangdong = Guard dog

Pet names?

This is cool. I never thought of using pet names, mostly because the clicky maps make it so I don't have to remember names, and I don't usually write notes to myself.

We have a couple on the Texan Wars map which for some reason we play all the time.
We call
Corsicanna - Fruit Cake because someone told us they were famous for their fruit cakes
Nacog...whatever the names is - we call Nacho
Indian Territories - we just call them Rev's

I have a couple on Imp Rom:
Have called Cilicia for Cicilia as long as I can remember. Just a typo that I typed wrong so many times I've convinced myself it's right

!
Same with Creta et Cyrenaica, I'm calling it Crete et Cyrenaica (calling it CEC when I have a teammate that knows the map well.)
Not really pet names but just typos.
