Has there ever been a map thats been pulled from the site?

Postby SimplyObsessed on Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:11 am

I mean like after it's been made public and been played on, has a map ever been deleted? (I don't mean the seasonal maps!)

Some maps were closed down for a while---Das Schloss is a good example of a map being taken down because it turned out to be semi-broken when originally we released it. It took a while for the map to get back into live play.

You could say that some of the maps that had to be revamped due to legal reasons---those original images were sort of 'deleted' and replaced, but really they were just offered in new graphical forms.

In case you were wondering, Andy's talking about the Classic map here. We've even had Classic Art for a while, didn't really like those graphics though. I like the World Cities a lot better.

It used to be Middle Earth. Then it got nuked into "Centerscape" in the Canadian Thanksgiving Massacre. Eventually someone made new generic graphics for it and it became Midguard.

the original risk map that conquerclub used was threatened to be sued .. same with the lord of the rings map .... which is the whole reason this website is based in Canada now .. .to avoid copyright infringement in the USA ... a bunch of scheming bastards thought if they changed countries they couldn't be held liable for same laws ... Hasbro had another plan in mind ...

none of this website is original conception ... it is all stolen and reused ...

i want to know how to find a link to an accusation that i have been punished for ... but there seems to be no record ... and KING ACHILLES wont tell me where it is posted ... but he had no problem issuing a warning

its the same bs over and over with this website ... if you piss off an admin then they talk to all their admin buddies and do what they can to punish you even if there is no official record of an incident transpiring ...

you're welcome ... if you had anything to do with the actual programming of the game and creation of the concept then you could argue .. map making isnt the same thing ... anyone can make maps once the concept has been stolen

Advertisements? Do we mean the ones below the bottom of the Instructions page? Unless you count the JustGiving widgit in the sidebar (which I don't think Lack makes any money from?) the advertisements are pretty well hidden for some reason.

Edit: Scratch that, I found one more:

There was also a map that looked similar to the old classic map graphics that had some one way attacks and had stars, but I cannot remember the name of it.

Well Beersurfer, here's what you don't understand...

Making maps is like making love to a beautiful woman.

I'm awesome at both. Let's leave it at that.

While it is certainly true that CC gameplay is largely based on a known boardgame, arguably a lot of maps on CC are so far removed from the original gameplay mechanics of said boardgame that they can no longer be said to be the same game.

Yes, all CC maps work within a certain gameplay framework, which includes troops that assault other troops with dice. So ask yourself this - how many games are there which use a) troops that assault other troops and b) dice? I'd estimate it to be around a metric shitton. Are all of those games copies of some other game? Which of them is the original? Who knows.

There's no thing in existence which can claim complete originality. Whatever you create, it has to lean on existing concepts, to provide a frame of reference for it - for example, if you write a poem, it makes no sense unless you use an existing language and alphabet which other people can understand. If you write a song, it leans on existing ideas of musical scales, chords, rhytms, etc. You couldn't create a computer game if someone hadn't invented the computer years ago, and someone else hadn't though of playing games on computers...

In that vein, your argument that this website, or indeed the maps created for playing on this website are "stolen" is nonsensical at best (and at worst, insulting to all the people who spend months of their time to create the maps you also enjoy playing here). Sure, all of those maps use dice, and troops that assault other troops. So do a million other games. And sure, maybe we could create a game that didn't use troops or dice but instead there would be sentient cauliflowers that used 12-dimensional fractal algorithms or whatever, but that wouldn't make sense to most players.

In short, your argument makes as much sense as claiming that chess stole the idea from tic-tac-toe.

i like the way you focus on specific points while avoiding the direct questions i asked you and then generalizing the world as a whole to reiterate your moot point

i said stolen and reused .. so yes "reused" is the term you should be focused on ... the website did the stealing while you reused others concepts ... my main point was that you get no compensation for your effort while the website gains profit from it ... maybe you can use -- 'making 9 maps on conquerclub' for your resume ...

In short, your argument makes as much sense as claiming that chess stole the idea from tic-tac-toe.

are you that dense? ... please start over with your overdramatic avoidance of what is really at hand here

if you did not play on this site why would you make maps ??? ... still haven't heard an answer to that ... while you talk in circles of the world as a whole ... im talking about this website ONLY ...

So do a million other games
really a million other games use dice and armies to conquer the world ?? if you can name 1 thousand of those ... better yet .. 100 of those ... then i will not make another comment

ANSWER THE QUESTION GENIUS

While it is certainly true that CC gameplay is largely based on a known boardgame, arguably a lot of maps on CC are so far removed from the original gameplay mechanics of said boardgame that they can no longer be said to be the same game.

have you ever played online Risk by hasbro? ... have you seen all the maps they have? ... do you not think most maps on this site are reiterations of those maps on the hasbro website???

im not going to argue that some maps are so far removed they dont really qualify ... and ill agree ... and all those cheesy maps are what ruins this site ... and those cheesy maps are also what skew the ranks of honest players ... farmers can use all those bullshit maps to pawn noobs and become conqueror ... which is completely opposite of what the original concept boasts

and never did i play a game of risk on the board 1v1 and have 1/3 neutral armies on the game board ... so some things are skewed drastically on this site ... far enough removed so they cant get in trouble for it

maps like arms race and space shuttle and your home is our base ... all those completely stupid maps that you just stack and launch and march thru tons of neutral armies and whoever gets best dice initially wins .... defeats the entire purpose of the concept of risk and i dont play or enjoy any map that focuses on killing neutrals ( i did however use feudal map for gaining medals) ... which also defeats the purpose of the original concept

There's a list of about 150 such games here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Avalon_Hill_games

Risk was not even close to being original. The first conquest games that used dice to simulate random real-world stresses were the kriegsspiels used by the Prussian officer training academies during the Napoleonic Wars. By the middle of the 19th century, similar wargames were being played by the officers corps in every modern army. By 1905, the wargames for civilians had been published.

Serious wargames took off as a popular phenomenon when Charles Roberts started Avalon Hill in 1954. Three years later Albert Lamorisse invented Risk. Lamorisse wasn't trying to be original, and he didn't pretend to be. He was simply cashing in on the current fad which Avalon Hill had started.

The reason Risk eventually became bigger than serious wargames was the ridiculously dumbed-down rules, which allowed even small children to learn the game. This made it possible to sell it as a family activity, a claim that real wargames couldn't make. Originality was not one of its selling points; simplicity was.

It was probably reported behind the scenes :-s Not every case is made public.

Whether it is reported behind the scenes or not, the recipient of the disciplinary action should be informed of the details of the aforementioned infraction. Who reported it doesn't have to be revealed, however the offender should be able to see what they did wrong.

His concern is not unwarranted.
