Sucking up to your leaders

natty dread wrote:Hey, I know this is going to seem like a novel concept to you... but here in BpB, we don't have an official party line. Unlike certain other clans on CC, we're not a clan built on a personality cult, where everyone needs to suck up to the leader or be shunned. Each of our members is free to voice his or her own opinions, even if they disagree with other members of the clan, even the leader.

? LOL, i found this line from natty very funny... is there actually any clans out there that players have to suck up to their leaders or fear them to even be in the clan? I don't believe it.

I am sure some clans are like that. I am sure some leaders rule supreme. Seems possible.

I know he wasn't talking about my clan. We have 19 members and 10 of them(including me) came from the msn game zone Risk site before it shut down. We've known each other, for the most part online for about 15 years. Of our remaining members, only half of those really ever go in our forum. My clanmates tell me to f*ck off quite frequently.

lol then let the accused come forward then... would love to hear some funny stories... its a fricking online risk game, 99.9% of people would just leave a clan if the leaders were pricks, i sure would

Unfortunately I have seen a few people suck up to their clan leaders or are afraid to stand up to them. To some people, they just want to be in a particular clan with certain high rankers. I have seen with my own eyes where a certain high ranked player, when questioned or challenged, has gone off the deep end. This is an online gaming site people!! This does not have anything to do with your real life. If you suck up to someone on CC, you will not get a tax break, you will not get a pay raise at your current job. Stand up for what you want, say what you want

I think its more possible and probable that everyone in a clan assumes the other clans are actually like that, and fail to recognize that all clans are probably pretty much the same... a great groups of players trying to beat other great groups of players with varying degrees of seriousness, and success.

It is funny the assumptions people make about other groups though. It really never ceases to amaze me.

AAFitz, your reasonable and thoughtful posting seems out of place in this topic.

I imagine that there are probably some clan members who try to suck up to a clan leader, probably because humans tend to congregate in stratified societies where ever they may be . But I think most clans are probably groups of friends, co-workers, etc, who are all on pretty equal footing.

The only reason is says "co-leader" in my signature is because there wasn't enough space to put "one of the 3 bitches responsible for organizing our clan activities".

I know...I sometimes take all the fun out of it. To my credit, I have very much cut down on my reasonable and thoughtful posts though.

In our clan each and every member is respected and loved for their uniqueness, free spirit, and individuality. I know this to be true because Owen told me and approved of this post.

Not so much for Natty, but what do you expect, he's a foreigner and a map maker.

I'm glad this was brought up.

In my clan, jefjef makes everyone do his bidding. If we every question him, he makes us lose a game to him to keep his rating up. This has been weighing on me for a long time, but I didn't know if it was wrong or not. I'm glad I was able to share this today. Thanks for listening.

I agree with you two. A leader's personality can have an enormous effect on a clan, but these are still online forums, and if someone has something they want to get off their chest, they just say it... in the private forum, at least.

Most clans have to maintain some sense of solidarity in the public forums, but privately, I don't think anyone feels pressured to conform to the leader's ideas.

Good thought, but I am not convinced by your argument.

Why do clans have to maintain some sense of solidarity in the public forums?

Err chap, the rest of your clan has acutally foed jefjef, you are the only one left giving him points.
I see a couple of things going on with the strong leaders clans.
One thing is a lot of clan members are just here to play games & have an easy fun time. Great outcome for them if they have got a gang of mates in a clan AND someone who will do all the boring organising stuff so they only have to turn up to play games. Well worth their while to give their leader regular pats on the back & feed his ego. :D I'm happier in a different sort of clan, but it is a fine and fair choice to stick by a leader if you want an easy life. Where roles are more fluid, there may be more liberty & equality but it definitely takes more work to get anything organised & maintain momentum.
Another thing, for people who really enjoy this game, you get a kick out of playing with great players on the team. If you have been lucky enough to team with one of the iconic players who really knows how to mess s*** up, and given those guys often have ridiculous egos & bizarre character traits, you'll be happy to feed his ego & make his traits part of the team banter, if that's what it takes to keep playing with him, keep learning & keep winning games.

Ahhh i know I am going to hear the "all you can do is talk about yourself?" crap but the reason clans maintain that sense of solidarity under the leaders in the public forums is because if a clan goes wild butt goose crazies they lose medals and their leaders are held responsible... so clans tend to have their leaders do the talking to save face. This however has no relation to sucking up to your leaders, this is just common sense people
