Max # of territories a map can have??? -- just wondering

So, I was just wondering, what is the maximum number of territories (and inter-territory connections) that this site can handle in a map? 1024? 4096? More? Is the upper limit defined by the capabilities inherent in the code, or usability to the end user (limitation of map's pixel by pixel size)? Because I was thinking of making a huge* honeycomb map....

*: "Huge" referring to a very large number of territories; the map will still be limited to the physical dimensions mandated by this site's rules, i.e, 350x600 & 600x800 px.

realistically people aren't gonna want to have to spend time scrolling through the drop downs to find the ter they want.
it would have to be split into like 4 separate drop down menus. and it would be impossible to defend anywhere as territory bonuses would be sky high. how do you defend if someone is getting 20 armies for territories?

I'll take a guess since I'm not the developer of the game. I suspect there is no limit to either the number of territories or inter-territory connections as both of these things are specified via the map xml and therefore need not be hard-coded in the game engine itself.

So the limiting factor would be usability to the end user as you say, and practical playability issues as joeyjordison has pointed out.

I find the World 2.1 map to be too big already, but that's just me.

When World 2.0 was made, it was allowed to exceed these size limitations. And as far as I know, there are no limitations on XML.

Your biggest problem will be getting it past Andy and the rest of the Foundry. There seems to be a general disdain in the Foundry for any map larger than 48 territories, and I do not think yours will be well received at all.

I don't think that's true, but a huge honeycomb map would be both boring and unattractive. I find it hard to believe there'd be any demand for it whatsoever.
