I play almost exclusively one on one games and my highest rank was major. Does anyone know what ranks have been achieved this way? Most high ranking players are members of clans I presume.

many past conquerors have done so through 1 vs 1 games mainly. In fact the highest score ever was achieved through the use of 1 vs 1 games.

How long is a rope? :)

It all depends on the rank of your opponents. For many "simpler" maps, skilled 1v1 players are pretty much 50/50. With all the complex map/settings that have been popping up over time, the ones with patience to carefully think about every move/countermove will gain oh-so-valuable edges for a couple of percents.

Let's say you're hovering about 2200 points and face a 1900 point opponent. If he wins, he'll get 23 points. If you win, you'll get 17 points. To break even pointwise, you'll need to win 57.5% of all those matches, otherwise he's going to grow at your expense in the long run. It sure is possible to maintain such win ratio if you're better than your opponent, but just imagine for a second you're doing it against a 1350 point guy. Now you'd need about 74% in win ratio, which is an incredibly steep hill if the opponent actually knows what he's doing and the map rannge is huge (i.e. random map with standard settings)

but those are still specialist freestyle players who reach the really higher ranks, The current field marshal who takes advantage of noobs, and the former conqueror who concentrated on his freestyle advantage (not that there's anything wrong with those). It's just how they get the winning percentages of 70+ that help achieve a high rank. For most of the rest of us 1v1 players, 55%+ is usually a good margin while playing the more general maps where drop and dice have just as much impact as any inherent strategic advantage.

I play mainly 1vs1, and even with playing on the 'simpler' maps, I think I've won more than 50% of the time. But maybe I haven't, I haven't look at the percentages and am just going on my gut.
