What does "balanced play" mean?

Yeah... what does it actually mean?
I see lots of people have tagged me with "balanced play" in the ratings. But what does it mean? That I play balanced..ly? How does one play balancedly?
Does it mean they think I'm a balanced individual? That I don't flip out in the middle of the game and start assaulting here and there? But that would seem like it would be more about my personality than my gameplay...
Or does it mean I spread my troops balancedly accross the map?
Maybe it means I attack people balancedly, that I keep the power-ratios of the players in balance? There's just so many possible interpretations for "balanced play", I don't even...
Is "balancedly" even a word?
People... I need answers.

Balanced play means having a consistent strategy.
Playing against a player with balanced play means not being able to surprise him or break his gameplan.

That is how I have applied it when I tag someone with that.

Its a very stupid tag.
Initially it was supposed to counter or be instead of something regarding bullying, etc. However, in the end the discussion of all the tags was cut without a consensus and this is the result.

I always took it to be you happily attacked everyone without prejudice instead of just constantly attacking one player throughout the game

Here's my take...I play the game Diplomacy a lot. The end goal of Diplomacy is to be the winner...and there can only be one winner (theoretically, yes there are other possibilities, but screw them!). Anyway, what that means is that I as a play want to keep everyone that's still alive in the game capable of defeating any single player, as necessary...to keep them from being able to win the game. Unless it's me, of course. That means shifting alliances ALL THE FREAKING TIME in some games, trying to keep that balance of power alive until I can make MY move to win it. In my view, that's what "Balanced Play" means.

Agree, but think whilst the tag has positive vibes.... It is a shit house and redundant tag...... A bet each way. Balance infers good and bad in balance, so walking the line between good and shit house. Reading the tag literally would really suggest one word - average

Yeah, as Bogan said, but I've also always considered it to mean that your play is balanced and doesn't suck too much, so it's a bit more complimentary than average?

Isn't that what average means. Average is the mean... ah forget it.

"You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know.
You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left."
— Dr. Seuss (Oh, the Places You'll Go!)
As you can see, it's all about balancing, and Dr. Seuss has it figured out. Don't trip on the battlefield...or is it be dextrous and deft?
I dunno.

When they call a Mixed Martial Artist a well balanced fighter it is not because he can stand on one foot while playing a banjo It is because he has a strong foundation in his ground game, standing game, ju-jitsu, mental and physical toughness. Karelpie hit the nail on the head as well.
I think a balanced player at CC is consistent in the style of play they choose to excell in. Troop Management, board placement and other factors. They should also be able to play freestyle while drinking a soda and typing.
