Speed games are games where you have 5 minutes instead of 24 hours to make your turn. So if you are away for 15 minutes from your computer, you may already have deadbeated. Speedsgames are a perk for those who support the game with a premiumship, but there are also a few days a year where you can get unlimited speedgames, like the st patricksday celebration, for one day only.

This means you and your opponent must be online at the same time. You must also finish the game, you cannot go to bed and take the turn in the morning, you have 5 minutes per turn. Some speedgames can take a long time if everybody is waiting and not doing much, but they can also be over in a flash. Many do not last beyond the half hour.
