Which map/setting changed your mind about the game?

When I was a young striper freemium, I enjoyed the occasional freestyle game as a way to speed up my turns. Once I got a little more serious about CC, I dismissed freestyle as a game best suited to adrenaline junkies and those obsessed with clickies and fast Internet connections.
But then Gilligan conned me into playing a bunch of manual, no spoils, freestyle, quads Sydney Metro and like that (snap) I saw that there was an actual art to this seemingly pointless setting. On this particular map, with those particular settings, freestyle was my new love. I thrilled at the idea of coordinating team attacks and waited with bated breath to see what my opponents did on their turns.
I still haven't turned into a freestyle convert, but if anyone ever wants to freestyle down under, I'll be there!
So how about you all? Is there a game, a map, a setting that changed how you thought about CC or your own personal style?

Ah, good thread topic! Mine would be Escalating Spoils. I have never, ever liked playing Risk with escalating spoils in RL. I always thought it dumbed down the strategy of continent conquest and just strategy in general. I hated the whole "camping for cards" strategy, where one would focus on just taking that one easy territory per turn until they could cash and destroy.
Conquer Club taught me the art of Escalating - that there's more to it than just that. Getting a strong foothold, budgeting troops, choosing which territory/ies to attack or when to cash - I've finally grown to appreciate it! I especially enjoy them now for a nice, quick speeder here and there (though I almost always lose - I think I need to stay away from AssDoodles...)

Classic trips...back in 2008.
I immediately evolved into a 'no cards player' rather than just a standard player...also I stopped playing flat standard (apart from in speed games) around this time.
Also 2.1 8 man dubs...I realised that with high level opposition this game plays out perfectly, in that it'll usually take between 30 and 80 rounds. Which is how I think standard no cards should go...though of course with high level opposition it'll just pointlessly stall.
Also it is my favourite setting for playing great opposition from different styles....players I wouldn't normally play against.
But classic trips was the big thing...totally changed how I viewed the game.

Seq - No spoils - FOG. Strategy at it's best. I really enjoyed Europe 1914 map over most others early on. So many fun ones now I hardly play it anymore.

I am sure many people could guess my answer...

Yes! It's Adjacent Attacks.
With Adjacent Attacks, you can only attack from the territories you owned at the begining at the turn. So the game resembles more like "real" war. IMHO, it involves a lot more of planning and strategy, because it's not only about building a huge army to storm the board with. It's about actually battling around all the board. Sometimes with several fronts, and sometimes leaving one of your fronts undefended to concentrate on the other front. Something impossible with Unlimited Atack, because if you leave one border open, then your opponents can enter to the very center of your empire.
No, don't look for Adjacent Attacks in the game settings for the New Game screen. it's something not implemented yet in the site. But a group of passionate members play Adjacent Attacks simulating it by gentleman's rule. I have hosted two and a half tournaments with this rule (the first was just co-hosting) and I am positively surprised because everybody playing follows the rules, and incidents are very few. However, I look forward to this suggestion being implemented in the site.
In fact, I was about to leave the site when the first Adjacent Attacks tournament started. It convinced me to stay around.
I know some people will disagree with me, but in my opinion, implementing AA would attract a section of the user base that right now is either not getting into CC or leaving after some time. It's something that is just not covered with current options. So it would be not just another variation, but a completely different (and in my opinion more enjoyable) style of game.

1vs1. Whenever I would play World Domination/Risk in real life, it was always with a group of people. But on CC, I mostly enjoy 1vs1, and I'm happy to play most of my games as 1vs1.
I think Team Games in general comes a close second, because of the 'digital wall' that makes communication and discussing tactics easier on CC than in real life.

Fog of war. I'm not a big fan of the 12 hour fog rule because I'm always in a rush to get a new game underway so that I can begin to develop a plan or see the plan that my opponents will be using. So I'm pretty quick to take my turn in a fresh game. I understand the fairness of the rule and I will always accommodate, but I never would have thought it up or asked for before it was explained to me.
When I first learned about it, I remember thinking "Wow...this is some serious business."

I too like to freestyle down under, but what does that have to do with Conquer Club?

Freestyle, fog, team games, and assassin settings. All things that couldn't be done in real life, thanks

Theoretically, you could do Assassin in RL.

I guess, but it would be kind of hard making sure everyone had someone that created a chain.

For maps that have changed how I understood world domination---I think the two first maps were Space and USApocalypse.
Space introduced the idea of 'region sharing' between bonus zones which I thought was pretty cool in 2006.
USApocalypse introduced 'troop subtraction' for holding the irradiated regions, cool for 2006 again.
