Stretched Game

Postby spincr on Tue May 03, 2011 4:24 am

Did anyone ever get into a situation in a map where there wouldn't be an ending any time soon even though you wish there would? A certain game is taking forever and no one has any direct advantage.. So basicly this is going to last forever (or untill someone gives in and stops showing up for 3 turns)?

Yes, there are numerous games like that. For example, Game 4005878
Unless all players in the game previously agreed to play a "build (up) game" (where the objective for everyone is not to win, but simply to place as many armies as you can per turn on your territories), then it will eventually end because of attacker's advantage. Even if all players had the same amount of troops being deployed every round, a player has an incentive to attack because as random as the dice can get, attackers will always have 1 more dice than the defender, giving a greater probability for them to win a roll. Therefore, all players have an incentive to attack even if the game seems like a "stalemate".

well thats not completely true.

if player a, b and c all have 100 armies, then player a will have attackers advantage if he attacks player b, but that'll only give the advantage to player c, who will still have 100 armies, while b and c have less.

but because no one wants a game to last forever, thats usually enough incentive for people to still do more then stack and attack, even though it might not leave them the strongest, it still provides perspective to win, instead of being sure no one will win.

If that's the case, they can either choose to slightly chip off one player's stack, or spread the attacks evenly on 2 or more players.

I like games like that sometimes planing an attack turns before hand. I find them really interesting to see where players deploy. What you can do to prevent attacks. I would get annoyed if i only had 4 games but now i like it!!!!

I had a game go on forever not too long ago. Some 147 rounds and nearly 7 months, a 4 man stalemate. About 5 of those months was the stalemate too!

Nice to hear it happens more often than just once. The problem isn't incentive or dedication on anyone's part. The problem is that after anyone's turn the tables have turned thus far that the advantage would be great if that player gets another turn without casualties, therefor the next person attacks that one and so on.

No one has a clear advantage and the map has been pretty much devided by 3 (almost literally 33% each:).
