I think it's a psychological thing, to be honest. I've more often seen players who are all but dead take their turns in a timely manner and accept defeat with honor than I've seen people intentionally sandbag. But, like the good dice bad dice thing, we tend to remember only the bastards that waited until half an hour was left for their turn, thus denying the victor the spoils.
All I know is that, when I find myself avoiding a game because I know it's lost, then it's time to suck it up and take my turn. Just tryin' to be a positive member of the community.
