Profile/Signature question from a novice

Can anyone tell me -- with moderate detail -- how it is that users put their ranking in their signatures. I am talking about the images that look like they are clipped right off of the Scoreboard pages. Is that a cropped image from the Scoreboard or is it some type of coding or what?
