A Question of Chatlog Ethics

This has come up for me in games past.

If one is in a Foggy game, and you say something about your own deployment that is actually true. Something large is hiding if they're dumb enough to take away that one-country one-army buffer zone. If they attack it, they basically come through a cloud and see your spiritual Flash Gordon Along With Screaming Brian Blessed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnTHypbLlkE <-- like that.

If it's actually true, is that considered an attempt at baiting? And therefore, is this bad form? I've never actually been clear on what would constitute polite chat about The Game During The Game. I'm not sure there even IS a line, and more a matter of personal taste.

So I'll throw it out to you guys. Would you consider an opponent telling you about The Armies That Are Actually There if you go and look, thus opening yourself up to attack, an impolite move or a decent enough strategy against the impatient?

Good strategy. It's the fun of multi-player fog games.

2010-09-07 18:22:06 - natty_dread: i'm too afraid of your 28 armies in amazonas...
2010-09-07 18:31:46 - saxitoxin: I don't have that kind of firepower. I only have 1 army in Amazonas. In fact, I only have 1 army *total.*

I would never dream of revealing info in a foggy game with players I didn't know well. But if I'm playing with funny people, then I'll engage in banter similar to what aog posted. However, no matter how funny the players are, I would never do it if jrh_cardinal is playing, because he'll cut me.

I feel like if I played more Fog of War games, I'd probably attempt to use misinformation my advantage---especially in larger maps.

Something like:

2010-09-07 18:31:46 - Beckytheblondie: This stinks! I have to roll with 4 sided dice numbers 1,2,3,π while all of you have 6 sided dice. Grrr :---)

I do feel its fair though to reveal aog's height in foggy games.
