auto attack automatically attacks until you take over the territory or you run out of armies to attack with ...kind of a DO or Die

Attack = one roll of the dice.
Auto - attack = keep rolling the dice until:
a) You win, or
b) You are reduced to 3 attacking armies

8)

auto attack sucks never use it unless you got a few hundred armies you can spare

if you have no chance of winning , use auto attack with 5 against 20....when you win that battle, you may have a chance again

Auto attack should only be used in Freestyle RT. And only if that place is the most important place on the board!

It's very simple.

One is an attack. The other, is an automatic attack.

See?

i use it reasonably often when i've got a big stack of armies and I'm cleaning up a load of threes or fours at the end of the game.

I'm paranoid as hell about auto-attack. I almost always only use it when I've got a huge stack and I'm clearing out ones.

Against larger armies, no way, unless I'm in one of those desperation circumstances that aafitz described above. I'm petrified that I'm going to auto-attack 18 on 4 and end up with 3 on 2.

and that would suck badly.

The difference between auto attack and attack ?

It's the difference between lightning and a harmless lightning bug. :)

(I never used to use auto-attack...but I do now. I'm looking forward to when you can set your stopping point though. That's supposed to be on the TO-DO list.)

I use it if I know I would be willing to go down to three armies anyway.

Every time you hit Auto-Attack, Conquer Club donates money to hungry children in Somalia

Attack takes longer but if you use Auto attack you never know if you will lose 9 on a 1 man terr. and shatter your border defense or attack.

Auto attack is me beating you over the head with a hammer for asking stupid questions.

I always use it because it's faster. Sometimes it works out poorly, other times not.

Murphy's Law is applied much more liberally to Auto-Attack than regular attack.

Actually, I think Murphy's Law is in effect on every roll here.
