Flat Rate groups are worth 4 for red, 6 for green, 8 for blue and 10 for mixed set of 3 cards..
At the start of your turn you can trade in 3 cards for extra troops.
you MUST trade in cards when you have 5 or more.. You can get 5 or more cards during your turn when you conquer somebody totally.(meaning take his last country) If he had any spoils, you get them. If the total of your spoils is above 5, you get to cash them in midturn. So taking someone out with flat rate can be profitable.

OK, that helps some. But what do you mean about the colors?

On this site, the word 'spoils' is interchangeable with 'card(s)'.

You must cash in groups of THREE spoils at a time; an attempt to cash more/fewer than three will be rejected.

There are four combinations of spoils which you can cash in:
  • RED, RED, RED
  • GREEN, GREEN, GREEN
  • BLUE, BLUE, BLUE
  • RED, GREEN, BLUE

If you're going to cash in your set, you must do it at the start of your turn - even before deploying your other troops.
Each different set will grant you MORE TROOPS to deploy on that given round, in addition to your existing deployment.
The values of each set are as follows:
  • RED, RED, RED +4 troops
  • GREEN, GREEN, GREEN +6 troops
  • BLUE, BLUE, BLUE +8 troops
  • RED, GREEN, BLUE +10 troops

So, if you begin your turn and have 3 troops to deploy, but then cash in a red-red-red set, you'll be able to deploy 7 troops.
Simples.

In addition to all this, each spoil you own will have a region name written on it. So, assume that you hold the following spoils:
Perth, London, [Chicago]
But in that particular game, you control the Chicago region - that's why the Chicago spoil is in bold/brackets. If you choose to cash in that set, you will get 10 bonus troops AND another 2 troops deployed automatically on Chicago. Again, simples.

As SirSebstar mentioned above, you are forced to cash in when you hold 5 spoils.

When you eliminate another player, you automatically gain his spoils. There are all sorts of interesting scenarios which can arise from this, but I feel you've already got enough to think about here.

Happy hunting.
