not sure if this is writen down somewhere, but do i have to leave a rating? just finished my first game and left rating for 3 players, but 4th player missed first three turns and was kicked out before game really got going, so didn't see point. but i guess also in a general sense, do i have to leave a rating, or is it just a useful but optional extra?

As MichelSableheart mentioned, leaving ratings are completely optional. But leaving ratings is an easy way to get a bright shiny medal if you haven't gotten any yet.

If you think your rating accurately reflects your experience with the said player (ex.you leave 2 one stars to a very rude opponent), then it would benefit other players. This is because many people look at a player's rating before playing with/against them, and ppl with not so decent ratings are often auto-foed by some players (like me).

thanks for advice, will be leaving ratings for people in future, (i do like bright shiny things!) but the player i mentioned hasn't even played any games yet, maybe they had a life crisis, it would be a bit harsh to come back to a rubbish rate wouldn't it?

It's more likely that they won't come back at all, to be honest. It happens quite regulary that players join the site, sign up for a game, and then completely forget about it.
