Freestyle. Taking turn at same time to finish off a target.

I was just robbed of cards and points when another player waited to begin his turn as I was well into mine, and finish off the last country of the opponent I was going after. I took out the Majority of countries and armies from "Blue", then about 6 minutes into my assault, "Green" started his turn, cashed, cut me off, and finished the last couple of Blue's countries/armies for the cards and points (Terminator game).

http://www.conquerclub.com/game.php?game=189672

I've played about 40 freestyle games and that's the first time that's happened to me. The other players says it's a legit move, but my bum feels a little sore... :?

I suppose if it wasn't meant to be used, then turns could not be taken at the same time. I'm curious what players think of that tactic.

2007-01-29 21:31:13 - Ultimight: You're a cheating A-Hole GTE
2007-01-29 21:31:39 - GTE: why
2007-01-29 21:31:52 - GTE: cheating?
2007-01-29 21:32:19 - GTE: just because I got there 1st
2007-01-29 21:32:44 - GTE: thats what the freestyle is all about
2007-01-29 21:33:59 - GTE: nothing illegal about that move at all. Please don't accuse players of cheating when they play as fairly as possible.
2007-01-29 21:36:15 - Ultimight: Freestyle is to take turns in any order to speed up the game. It's not so you can lurk around waiting until another player is nearly down, then take your turn at the same time to swoop in for the kill.
2007-01-29 21:37:05 - GTE: nothing illegal about that move at all. Please don't accuse players of cheating when they play as fairly as possible.
2007-01-29 21:37:11 - Ultimight: I'll be sure to post a link to this game on the Forums and we'll see what the other players think...
2007-01-29 21:37:51 - GTE: why not I knew if you headed my way I could take out blue before you. Its fair
2007-01-29 21:39:28 - GTE: Is this your first freestayle game Ult? You have never tried to put armies on a territory that you no longer own because the guy in front of you is playing his turn
2007-01-29 21:39:53 - GTE: please do
2007-01-29 21:40:07 - Ultimight: I could be wrong. I always assumed that taking turns at the same time was a glitch and Freestyle only meant the order. Like I said, I'll post it. I'm curious what other players think of such a move anyway.
2007-01-29 21:40:15 - GTE: I am an honest player who only plays by the rules.
2007-01-29 21:41:33 - GTE: trust me, I have continents taken while Im trying to put my armies on.
2007-01-29 21:42:50 - GTE: Its the great benefit of freestyle, if you can be on when a players taking his turn you can start yours. It really changes strategy.
2007-01-29 21:44:49 - Ultimight: Of 50-some games this is the first time I have seen it really make a difference. Maybe it's just the first time it's happened to me so I noticed it.
2007-01-29 21:45:57 - GTE: oh its huge benefit. Its why I play so many freestyle games
2007-01-29 21:46:23 - GTE: doubles freestyle is even better, both players can play at same time
2007-01-29 21:47:07 - GTE: I can attack an opponent and then reinforce my armies to my partner while hes taking his turn.
2007-01-29 21:47:42 - GTE: I end my turn and he continues with his turn. Its wild
2007-01-29 22:10:30 - ksslemp: GTEs right. I don't know about the "Lurking" thing but his actions are the normal play in freestyle.
2007-01-29 22:11:40 - ksslemp: If this is the first time Ultimight has experienced this, he/she/it's lucky.
2007-01-29 22:19:32 - ksslemp: (GTE: oh its huge benefit. Its why I play so many freestyle games) Oh is that why, I thought it was because you're a Huge Homo!

It's not a common tactic because the oppurtunity for it doesn't arise very often, but its perfectly legit and one of the finer points of freestyle.

I used this tactic myself early on here and then posted a thread about it because I was accused of playing cheaply. I think I only managed it twice since then, and the second time was against the same player as the first time. He got fairly heated with me but I think we settled things alright.

Anyway, despite the fact that I've only been able to use this move a few times I think about it a lot more often. Whenever I am trying to take a player out in a freestyle game I am very wary of the fact that someone else might jump in and steal the kill. To prevent that I try to play late in the round so I can't be interrupted, or I play at hours when i think the other players aren't around. You can also try to protect youself by deploying to block the other players who could interrupt you and by leaving the last enemies you need to kill in an area where you control everything and therefore you will get the elimination even if someone else tries to stop you.

There have been suggestions to eliminate simultaneous turns but keep everything else about freestyle the same. This thread is one reason I wouldn't like that style much, because I think this situation is the most exciting and interesting part of any game setting on Conquer Club. You're in a race to eliminate the guy before someone can steal the kill, or you try to be sneaky and interrupt someone yourself....its intense sometimes (and frustrating) but I love it!

As my good friend Stephen Colbert would say, Grow a pair of Thatchers!

It's not a multiple account, it's not a secret alliance. Hence, it's legal. I mean, come on, we're supposed to be emulating war, attacking and killing dozens and hundreds of soldiers. You think being sneaky and getting called a "cheater" would stop a tyrannical warlord?

Thanks for the responses. I learned a new trick today, I didn't want to pull it on someone else if it's considered an exploit of the programing.

Another related topic is if theres two of u left and u take the last turn u can go in to your opponents continents leaving u weak and when they start there turn start urs and reinforce ur hole b4 they have a chance to respond. Giving yourself a huge advantage.
Not well explain hope u get the jist.
If some1 wants to explain this better feal free
Personally i think this is another why u shouldn't b able to take turns at the same time. It wouldnt take much away from the freestyle experience and make it a fairer fight.

Hmmmnnn...

Okay....

If my math is correct, you took 3 minutes and 32 seconds to start attacking after cashing in.

By the way I look at it, if you'd gone ahead and started attacking, you could have finished off the other person before your opponent checked into the game.

I just squeeked by missing a 45 troop set of cards because my opponent cashed in just as I finished off his last territory.

Timing is everything and keep track of who can do what in Freestyle.

As has already been said, this is one of the best parts of freestyle which is as much about timing as actual gameplay. However, it only works when it is realtime. Otherwise it is too much about luck. One reason why i'm a convert to sequential. But your game is simply an example of the opponent having better tactics - the sort of game I would like to be involved in

as long as its possible (it won't be for much longer) you have to take advantage of it to succeed

I don't know why it wouldn't be okay. To me, it only makes sense as a tactic.

It's not taking advantage. It's not a glitch to take turns at the same. If you had been around since before October 30 you would know that.

it really is the whole point of freestyle...nothing like clicking away trying to get to a player before he can wipe someone out or kill all your territories...almost always better to stop him in the act...assuming the dice agree

This thread has fallen victim to a "trickle down effect"...

The first few responses were very insightfull, thoughtfull, and informative. The rest is just silly garbage, in my oh-so-humble-opinion. Some of them did make me Laff though, thanks.

I'll just say it plainly. There should be a freestyle option that doesn't allow turns to be made at the same time. I just don't have the time or the desire to hang around, refreshing my game browser every few minutes to try and take advantage of said strategy. However, I have nothing against anyone who does. Even if the option for a freestyle game without mixing turns were available I'm sure I'd go for an all out freestyle game now and then.

So... I'd like to start a new vote within this thread. I would like freestyle format for TURNS only (no tirns at the same time), to speed up the game and weed out the slackers.

Would you like to have the option of a freestyle game without the option to take your turn as another player takes his/her turn.

Any future responses: (Yes, I'd like that) or (No, that's stewpid because...).

This suggestion was made already and is pending, but I think it should be implemented as well. It would allow you to have the flexibility and freedom of different strategies in freestyle, as well as quicker games....but it would make being at the computer a lot less of an advantage. It would also take away the excitement you can get from some freestyle games so I would like to see both options....freestyle as is, and a semi freestyle where you can't overlap turns.

If I remember correctly lack and Andy liked that idea as well....I suppose they just wanted more opinions or want to work out other bugs (such as whether each round would remain exactly 24 hours or not, since there would be periods in that 24 where you couldn't play).
