2010-05-17 23:14:47 - danalan received 3 troops for 8 regions
2010-05-17 23:14:55 - danalan deployed 3 troops on Ciboney
2010-05-17 23:15:00 - danalan assaulted Taino from Ciboney and conquered it from 72o

Why would you attack a 6 stack on the first turn of an escalating game?

That's exactly what I did during the Whac-an-Admin game. Had to go for the assaulting-advantage (and it worked).

I think most people in this thread are missing the point...

It being an escalating game, nothing more than 1 troop should be taken in any one attack. Nothing riles me more on this website than watching people try to take bonuses and attack stacks for no apparent reason. Though in fairness, I remember making the same mistakes several thousand games ago.

I agree... what a noob. Seriously, it's not that hard to learn basic escalating strategy... I can't believe how many players on this site don't know what to do for the first 8 turns of an escalating game.

Because of course there is only one precise and exact way to play this game and win. That must be it. You could never win a game unless you did exactly what everyone else says you have to do.

It's patently ridiculous to think that the only way to win an escalating game is to "deploy only" or "only attack stacks with X amount of armies" on specific turns.

Damn elitists took all the fun out of this website a long, long time ago.

To be fair, it really depends on the game settings and size of the map. You can't leave a 6 on a small map in 1 vs. 1, or in team games, unless somebody else is the stack.

Looking through their games, though, I'm guessing it's an 8-man esc Map Blaster game. There are times when it's appropriate to hit a stack in multiplayer before the big cashes.

First turn, though...I don't understand it.

There are certainly some viable variations to the escalating strategy... some are map-specific, some work for specific settings, some for maps of certain size etc.

On some maps - mainly some large maps but there are also some other exceptions - it can be advantageous to take bonuses in the very beginning of the game.

However 90% of the time the basic strategy of building stacks, ignoring bonuses and preparing your way to kill and sweep the board is the best way to go.

I don't think it's elitism to follow the best strategy, and I certainly understand the frustration when "noobs" attack your stacks only to take a +2 bonus - by doing this they are effectively hurting both themselves and you, wasting troops of both.

And lastly, yes, there certainly are situations where it is smart to attack another player's stack before elimination. Sometimes it can be to block another player from making a kill. Or it can be to place your own troops in position to kill another player - if you have no other way of doing it except going through someone's stack. But very rarely (I'd almost say never, but you never know...) do these situations occur on the first turns of a game.

Of course, some people do take this way too seriously - getting angry at "noobs" for not knowing these things. After all if they are noobs, how could they know? Those people should be educated, not shouted at. You can tell them nicely... "that's not very smart you know, a better strategy would be blah blah blah" and so on...

there is not one single standard universal way for strategy when it comes to this bunga, although in most cases I would agree with this theory, but, sometimes there is some exceptions and outside the box thinking depending on the set up and your objective for winning.

For some reason, everytime I see this thread, it makes me think of Caught Stealing, by Jane's Addiction/.

I know it should make me think of some other bullshit, but it doesn't, and I don't know why.
