how do some players think so fast?

Postby ab327 on Tue Jan 09, 2007 8:42 pm

i was just in a classic game freestyle, ended by round 5. i got flustered because im a private and the 2 other guys were major and captain. they came into it and knew what to do immediately. how do they know this? i shouldnt have joined looking at it now,but you know, one of those things.

wondered how ppl know what to do so quickly.

i'll stick to sequential.

you get used to it. and most good players just try to snowball in escalating card games, which basically means you just go after the weakest guy, kill him, take his cards, get the bonus, and then go after the next guy. so really its pretty easy to think about what youre doing

It's mostly comm sense!

Plus you'll be surprised how some people start with one idea and then change it and change it and change it...

Also alot of it is luck, they might look like they know what there doing but sometimes the slightest thing can determine what they do next.

You just have to keep practicing mate. :)

Before you start your turn look at the map and make some plans. Try to plan ahead and think what you would do if you were in their position. Then go with the flow.

Stick with sequential. You can really get burned in freestyle when your opponents take pretty much back-to-back turns. You log back in and your dead.

Freestyle isn't as predictable as sequential. You have a harder time judging the right move.

The most important thing is to have a general game plan or strategy that you should practice and work on. This strategy will change depending on what kind of game it is. My general strategy is to pile all my troops on one territory and making sure I get a card every turn. When the redemtion value gets up to around 10 to 12, look to see if you can cash in on your cards and elminate a player, if you do so the game should be yours. That is my general strategy, but there are alot of variances during a game. Usually I attack the weakest bording territory to get an easy card. But sometimes someone might be getting to strong and i'll have to attack and break up their continent. Sometimes I might see that i'll be able to take a continent and hold it easily while still having a large number of troops on my borders. But my general strategy stays the same. So work on a strategy that works for you, and get the major decision down before the game even begins. That will enable you to think faster and adapt more easily to a changing and evolving game.

It becomes more habbit than thought really, you start to recognise patterns of play, and realise what everyone's doing, and where the important territories are.

It's like in chess before you can actually think 20 moves ahead at the opening, you just try to move your pieces into positions so as to control the middle of the board by mid game.
