You could pull up dozens of GD threads complaining about/ explaining the dice, but how do we fix it? Who would end up making the executive decision? Is there any way to beta test a new dice system? Also, how does CC's dice program match up with other sites similar to this? I know I'm not the only one who has these questions...

you're not.. what's worse, even with truly random dice, there will always be these threads... bad beats (which will happen frequently, and the more often the more you play) will always drive people here to complain

Yeah I agree, there will ALWAYS be people who complain about the dice. but on the flip side, with the current system there do seem to be quite a few games where it is extremely streaky. For example, all of the rolls that i posted earlier in this topic all happened in one game. I'm no math wiz or anything, but the odds of that happening have got to be dang near impossible.

Would you like us to intentionally make the dice less random? Otherwise, we'll do nothing.

I'm simply asking what our options are. Is there a different program that will truly generate random dice? Or is there a way to set a limit on the max/min outcome? Like say 25% luck limit? I'm not exactly sure how everything works and how the numbers add up, I'm just curious what else is out there, and if it would be good for the site or not.

Can you make them a little more random?

Random.org's numbers are as good as it gets.

Or is there a way to set a limit on the max/min outcome? Like say 25% luck limit?

We can do that. I don't think that we should.

Is there any way to test games with a limit set? Who knows, maybe it ends up being one of the best things for the site. If we have the ability to test it, then why not. Thankyou for responding btw, I'm not trying to come off as douchey here, just askin questions

It is something that we could test on the beta site, sure. But the issue here is that it is so subjective as to what makes a game "better." I don't think a game is better if I am saved from losing because the software killed my losing streak. I view that probability as a fundamental part of the game. Many would disagree, but it's hard to be sure that we'd be making people happier as a whole. Yes, there's a lot of people who complain about the dice -- but that doesn't mean the others are in the minority. They just have no reason to speak up about it, because they're happy with what we currently have.

I agree. So can you explain where the bias against rolling 1's is coming from? Or do you have a better explanation than the one suggested earlier - that CC is constantly reusing a set of data, which causes this bias and invalidates the randomness of the dice?

no, we would like you to make them MORE random... smartass...

Now one would think that creating a die roller is an easy thing: just generate a random number every time... But want to know something fun? computers CAN'T generate "random" numbers...

A computer's random number generator is actually a complex equation based on a variety of internal factors... Since it is a mathematical process, it might not seem obvious but over time some patterns do occur...

One could argue that similar patterns exist in physical dice; as the edges of the die wear, dice begin to roll a certain way... Did YOU know that because of how the dimples affect (effect? f*ck i don't know) the weight of the dice you are statistically more likely to roll a 1 using a real set of dice!?!?!!

Metsfanmax wrote:Random.org's numbers are as good as it gets.

Because they use atmospheric noise in their generator... not your normal code... truly. random.

and i doubt very seriously they'll let us borrow it...

My conspiracy theory is that this already exists... a sort of "if player A wins X amount of battles then player A's % of 1's increases..." would explain why we have normal normal normal and then "wait what the f*ck is this shit" dice...

Also sometimes these numbers generators can be affected (effected? shit ok i'm looking it up) by running on certain hardware, and that could produce somewhat non-random results...

Precisely true, which is why very early in the site's history (early 2008) the site stopped using a random number generator and started buying numbers from random.org.

No, they won't let you borrow it, but they will sell you the output. That's exactly the point. We buy the numbers from random.org, and there isn't any better place to buy them, so doing anything else will make them less random, not more.

I mean, I read this on the site FAQs the very first night I came here. I'm not trying to be an asshole, but if you're just finding this out, after all your years here, then you haven't been doing your homework.

I ask the people who are for this site and who think the dice aren't streaky:

Why defend the site in the case that the dice aren't horrible? What are statistics really going to prove when someone loses a 23v1. I'm sure It's .0000000000000000000000 something chance of happening, but we already figured that one out on our own. No need for people to tell us when we already know the probability. Probability = should NEVER happen.

Site's in for a rough future if things like this keep going up. Changes need to be made. Thing is that no one has wanted to do so for 8 years.

The thing with statistics is they can be manipulated to show what ever you want. If a player has thrown some 1,000,000,000 rolls of the die then for then the average throw will be 3.5. It would take several tens of millions of low rolls in a row to alter this statistic which is also improbable but not impossible. Same with the ridiculous amount of 666 v 66 rolls that seem to happen regularly. 3 times in a recent game. The thing is some people have nothing better to do so will never leave the site so the users will not reduce and also if the dice were "normalised, would the best player win or would some games just go on indefinitely. It comes down to boxing clever, when the die are bad, play 1v1, when they are ok-good play multi player games. Either that or kicking the s&*t out of the computer and abusing the other players, which doesn't seem to work well!

On occasion and even more often lately.... The 1 die seems to get stuck on rolling 6... wiping out the three. Something has changed lately...? Maybe it's just me because my stats are red every time I look recently.
