Well played! I'm sure almost 20% of the people reading your "helpful" comments will think they were somehow relevant!
Congrats to Duk for, apparently, not realising the topic was about a homophobic slur and therefore rather relevant to the word gay.
Congrats to Caffeine for either completely failing to understand the situation, or doing a real good job of pretending to.
Should I waste my time explaining? I suppose I have to, just in case your misunderstanding is genuine.
The Awoodness C&A case in question, was about AW's use of the term "a asexual fag". Quote unquote. Personally, I think the statement is a nonsensical stringing-together of words. If one takes "fag" to mean homosexual and not a bundle of firewood, then how could one be homosexual and asexual at the same time? Obviously, it's a pile of rubbish. Personally, the most offensive thing about it is the grammatical crime of using 'a' instead of 'an' in front of asexual.
Be that as it may, it's in C&A, I'm not a C&A mod, and I don't care all that much what happens there.
Now, owen comes prancing into the thread.

Symmetry into this thread?!!! Those were the old days, the ruling on the word "fag" has recently changed... however, within this context, it is clearly a bigotry guideline violation... now, if he can just prove he got it from a news report, he will be find (*COUGH* *COUGH* *CHOKE* *GASP*)... the black jesus has spoken...-Jésus noir
There he says "the ruling on the word "fag" has recently changed"
In fact, that is not true. It has not.
However, in
this thread, he gets it right:
Subject: General Congratulationsowenshooter wrote:congrats to me for having to give my man Symmetry props, for being RIGHT!!! clearly, people don't know about recent rule changes regarding the word GAY...
The second one is correct. The policy on the word 'gay' has changed. The policy on the word 'fag' has not. That, first and foremost, is why owen's comments were irrelevant.
A little bit of background on this. The word 'gay' used to be one of the taboo words that would result in an automatic warning/ban under the bigotry guidelines. However, the zeitgeist has changed. It used to be that the word 'homosexual' was considered a value-neutral term, and 'gay' was considered a slur. However, the gay community has appropriated the term, and now the word 'gay' is considered value-neutral. It is therefore no longer considered a slur, and no longer results in automatic punishment.
The change was brought about by Symmetry's campaign, and as we all know he is still basking in the glow. He has good reason to be proud, because it was a very dramatic event. Former Admin blakebowling created a special thread to announce "Gay is not a derogatory term" in the mod HQ, and every mod had to come and sign the statement. In all my years as a volunteer on this site, that is the only time I have seen anything like it. Normally every mod has to sign a Volunteer Agreement with certain policies in it at the beginning of his tenure. After that, it's almost never mentioned again. Once in a while a policy changes and there's an unspectacular announcement about it. Other times it's even less spectacular -- the policy changes and there's no announcement at all, you just find out eventually through the grapevine. The unbanning of the word 'gay' was the one and the only time that I've seen this bizarre spectacle of mods being dragged into the front office to sign their names to a policy change. I objected to having to sign the thing (not because I disagree, but because I thought it was a stupidly trivial thing to have to sign) and was threatened with dismissal.
"Gay is not a derogatory term" is now the law of the land here at CCville, and everybody knows it. You cannot be banned for calling someone gay. This protection does not extend to synonyms which may be considered slurs. You can still be banned for calling someone a 'fag' or a 'poofter' or a 'fudge-packer'. Gay is considered value-neutral; those other words are not.
So, you see, when owen stormed into the C&A thread to announce that the policy on the word 'fag' had changed, he was completely wrong. And later, when he congratulated himself in
this thread for doing so, he pulled a bit of sleight-of-hand and substituted the word 'gay'. On that word, and that word only, the policy has changed, but it was completely irrelevant to the C&A thread because that's not what Awoodness had said.
Furthermore, by naming Symmetry in his post in the C&A thread, owen was clearly baiting, and if the old rules were still being enforced he would now have a ban coming for baiting, but enforcement has gotten very lax and he knows he will probably get away with it. Owen is a master of playing the mods; always has been, and he is pretty good at knowing when he can pull it off and when he can't.
