I just checked the list of donations of the senator impulsing the bill and CC.com is listed with 200USD.

Considering any donation would be from "Salamander Software" and not "CC.com"...

The first time anyone posts any copyrighted material on the forums, CC can be blocked in US by the SOPA/PIPA legislation. So all it takes is some disgruntled ex-member (or better yet, some Hasbro employee after Hasbro decides to reduce competition) to register on the forums, post a link to some copyrighted stuff, then rat out CC to the feds and that's it - no more CC within the US. And since a majority of the user base is from the US, CC would not stay profitable for long.

I don't see how lackattack would support a legislation that would put his entire business in jeopardy.

CC could be shut down; I don't think it's automatic that it would be shut down.

At the very least, CC could no longer operate the way it is now. We could say good bye to forums, good bye to any user-created content (maps, tournaments), good bye to game chat... everything that gives even the possibility for users to post even links to copyrighted material would have to be removed.

I suspect that, to be safe, that's what CC would have to do.

That being said, and excuse my ignorance, is lack Canadian? If so, could he change this to a Canadian website and then all the folks who play from countries other than the U.S. (like yourself) could continue to play? I admittedly know next to nothing about the internet so I'm not sure how that works. Just throwing it out there.

It depends on precedent. We'd have to wait and see how the judges rule on the big cases.

Haspro won't waste its time with CC because it's not worth the risk of losing/gaining nothing in court. If they remotely care about CC, they'll wait to see how the big cases are ruled, and then maybe come after CC. But really, CC is too small to be bothered.

... unless of course, (1) if these acts pass, over time, their bureaucracies may need a way to justify an increase in their budget by hunting down even small places like CC (10+ years, maybe 20??? but I really doubt it.)

or (2) someone within CC is disgruntled and seeks vengeance by mimicking the plan which you laid out.

Make it a movie or music that's copyrighted, and the MPAA or whoever they are would be on us like flies on shit. They've set that precedent against smallfries already. And that's WITHOUT SOPA/PIPA support.

However, and I hesitate to point this out, but ConquerClub is not "CC.com".

I believe the site already is operated in Canada.

In saying that, the original intent of SOPA and PIPA is specifically designed to block file sharing sites/companies who operate overseas from operating in the United States. They would enforce web hosting companies in the US to block the domain and IP of the site in question immediately. Search engines like Google would also be forced to remove any links to said site.

Since the US makes up most of the customers of this site, I doubt it would continue to be profitable without anyone from the US and would eventually shut down anyways.

So no... your solution wouldn't help.

how would it not help since americans are the biggest majority of the site. if this was to pass. we would have less multis.

Not only forums, but any user input would have to be cut down. No more game chat, no more user-created content like maps, tournaments or clans... CC as we know it would die.

At most, we might have a soulless, ad-revenue-driven, popup-riddled gaming site full of bots, multies and noobs. And that's probably the kind of sites the people behind these laws would like to see all around the net. They despise user created content. They despise any kind of entertainment they can't profit from, so they try their best to stifle free expression on the web and make us all into mindless consumer zombies that exist only to fatten their pockets.

We live in exciting times. Internet has given the world, for a first time, a medium where anyone can get their voice heard, regardless of their social status, wealth or political affiliation... The old money guys are very afraid of this. Their kind have held most of humankind by the balls for hundreds if not thousands of years. And now they feel threatened because they can no longer control all information. Free speech is a really powerful thing. So of course they try their best to get the internet under their control so they can maintain the status quo.

TL;DR: anyone who supports SOPA/PIPA is a horrible person who should be ashamed of his/her existence.

This is crass and misleading and should be buried.

SOPA and PIPA are not going to stop people who use the CC forums or any other forums posting links to the things that entertain, amuse or inform us. SOPA and PIPA are aimed at the sites & services which exist to steal the creative work of many people or allow individuals to steal that creative work.

You have to ask yourself do you want to watch Hollywood movies, do you want professional journalists to cover news events around the world, do you want to read specialist magazines, do you want high quality textbooks? If you do you have got to support SOPA, PIPA or some system that protects the creators of such works. Those films, magazines, books, games etc are expensive to make and people have to commit their lives to them to make them well. Right now those works can be easily stolen and shared aross the internet without any regard or recompense to the people who created them. It will stop being economically viable to produce such work unless something is done, not about the sites like CC forums where a few people post links, but about the sites & services which exist solely to do the stealing & sharing.

To paint this as a picture of individual freedom versus greedy corporations is just stupid. The really greedy and dangerous corporations right now are the Apples, Amazons, Googles, telcos, hardware companies which control our access to the internet. We all know which way google is lining up on this, it's in favour of its own profits and against the livelihood of struggling photographers, journalists, authors....

The MPAA has already thoroughly proven that "the little guy" is absolutely someone that SOPA/PIPA is aimed at. They're one of the leading forces behind these bills and they make a routine of doing this already WITHOUT these laws.
