Whats one of the most common flaws you see in new players?

Postby got tonkaed on Wed Feb 21, 2007 9:47 am

Though certainly new members might be good from the get go, one would figure that players who are new to the site would probably not do very well until they understood some of the elements of the game that come with a bit more practice.

So for all those who have played a game or two and feeling like sharing, what are some of the simple things that beginners could do to get a little bit better and hopefully keep playing?

I would have to say they give up too easily.. Don't get discouraged and deadbeat... you wont get better until you have some hard earned losses under your belt...

They deadbeat.

And many players have to have it spelled out to them that it's a bad idea to attack everyone but the player with two continents and the most armies. That's also pretty annoying.

I would say that new players who have no background whatsoever with the game tend to just attack attack attack, and waste away everything...

Spelling the word "u" as "you," and other things that makes them sound really, really stupid. Because they speak like that it's hard to take them seriously, and it makes their mistakes in the game seem worse and their victories seem accidental.

a useful one, realising that you get your opponents cards if you kill them, so it is worth gambling to try and wipe someone out.

As a new player myself, still possessed of the Red Question Mark of Newbiosity, I see one consistent thing about most newer players, myself included.

We are too reluctant on the attack. When presented with a chance to extend a strike, or risk attacking at even or slightly below even odds, we tend to back down. This is, I have found, exploited by the more experienced players, resulting in sudden reversals of fortune for the newer, more timid, player.

This is something I noticed playing my friends Fran2298, Puška and ZlaZwer RT. New players often try to to take a big continent early in the game wich they later cant defend plus it makes them a target.

I'm guilty of that.
Of course, I only do it if it's small...like four places or something and I control at least 50%.
I can't help myself...<_<

I concur - or worse is people that read it and don't reply - they seem to do what you ask/suggest but can't be bothered to write a reply!?

My advise would be "don't play if you don't have the patience to play a game that lasts a week or longer."

From what I have seen, a lot of new players deadbeat because it sometimes takes 2 or 3 days before they get their first turn. One might also want to keep in mind how many people are Ritalin.
There is no luck, only preparation and execution.

i dont think a lot of noobs really understand the concept of forting their team in doubles/triples. even in some singles i see noobs leaving themselves open because they dont properly fortify. just my opinion though.

my most common mistake is at the fortification stage. i forget to set the number of troops and allways end up moving just one. :(
that's why i started playing only unlimeted fortification games :)

I would agree with that 100% My first doubles game was against yossarian87 and alpine87. I thought that if my partner and I held a continent together we would both get the bonus. It wasn't until yossarian started attacking his partner that I realized my teammate and I had messed up. Then my partner became a deadbeat and left me alone against two Colonels who made quick work of me.

Neutral countries are the greatest gift one gets from a deadbeat. Well, I guess they're the only gift. I love them... I've never been attacked by a neutral country yet. They change the map in very interesting and useful ways. I didn't like them at first, but I've come to appreciate them a lot.

I had a game in which a guy deadbeated with 12 armies the Ukraine, Southern Europe, and Western Europe. It essentially gave Asia only two attackable points and cut off Europe from the rest of the world. Easily won the game for me, as I was the one holding Asia.

didnt even read the thread but...

they spread too thin

they dont realize the value of eliminating someone in escalating matches, and focus on their continents instead

I can't stand when noobs come into a thread, obviously don't read anything in it, and start spouting off their own opinions without checking to see if it was already brought up or not... like anyone cares what they think! :P
