A simple freestyle strat.

Postby hitogoroshi on Mon Aug 13, 2007 1:51 pm

This is an obvious one, but I thought I'd share anyway. Logic dictates one person will learn from this  It might be in one of the various help topics but I didn't want to dig in each one...
This is a RT strat that only works if you have AT LEAST one "region". Unless you're playing an RT game (in which case this is probably obvious to you) this is a freestyle 1v1 when you just happen to catch your opponent. It works like this - if you've been going at it and finishing a round every 5 mins., then wait for your opponent to start and then start yourself. Cash in any sets you have - then get a snack. With luck, your opponent will wear themselves out breaking your bonuses, but you can still collect the bonus for regions you don't own anymore. With this higher number it's easy to reclaim your continents and you can act knowing what your opponent did. An example while on the USA map:

2007-08-12 02:10:42 - Incrementing game to round 8
2007-08-12 02:10:46 - c.bond receives 2 armies for holding West

2007-08-12 02:16:36 - hitogoroshi fortified Oregon with 1 armies from Kentucky
2007-08-12 02:16:50 - hitogoroshi gets a card

While I had the higher army count, if I had waited for him to finish it would have dropped quite a bit. And if I had rushed to take my turn at the same time I would not have been deploying to have the Great Lakes on the next turn.

They get an hour to play as well, so they can just as easily wait it out, especially if the other player has more to deploy/attack and might run out of time.

I think it's an error that should be ammended. Two players shouldn't even be able to play their turns at the same time. Also.. why do you get an entire hour to take your turn?

There's a topic elsewhere on this forum with some suggested changes to the Freestyle format.

I think it's mostly aimed at the worst of the abuses, i.e. if you play first in a turn then wait it out until there's like 20 seconds left, then quickly start & finish without enogh time for the other guy to even have a go.

THAT I think is NOT Freestyle. But simply timing when you start & finish your moves indeed that's all in the game.

Meh, people leave negs over just about anything in Freestyle; those people should just go find a format better suited to them. Like some people even get upset if you quickly start a turn to take out the last remaining guy when another guy did most of the work and is on his way eliminating him.. then suddenly you snatch the last guy and the cards. :) This, simply, is war. :)
Alex..? Alexander the Great, my Commander, what's wrong? Did someone leave you negative feedback again?

It's FREESTYLE, which bears about as much resemblance to Sequential, strategy-wise as DOOM does to Master of Orion.

Not that freestyle is inferior, I don't think it is. However, it's a VERY different playstyle. One which I cheerfully admit doesn't suit me NEARLY as well as Sequential. If I'm on vacation, and can LIVE at the computer for a few days, I might play some freestyle again. Having a regimented schedule with freestyle games ticking over in the background... doesn't work for me... as I've found out to my ranking's dismay. ;)

Oh, you of course need the CC app for your Nokia/Symbian phone that polls game status through GPRS internet continuously no matter where you are or what time of the day or night, and immediately applies your preconfigured move(s). Or at least just immediately "start turn" and then alert you.

Thought that goes without saying right?

The larger question is why you would play a 1v1 freestyle game...

Yeah, sequential and freestyle are definitely two different ballgames. I'm a new player and have played almost exclusively freestlye games thinking that they would take less time. But now i've learned that I actually end up spending way more time taking my turns and waiting than I would in a sequential match. I think if I get a premium membership I will switch to playing sequential games just to avoid all of the hastles of freestyle.
