Alliances

Postby Mardiggan on Mon Jul 30, 2007 8:20 pm

Is there a particular way in which alliances are to be declared, or initially proposed?

yeah you kinda need to be blunt. but i recommend against the sneaky alliance where you recommend to take out another player. Alliances should also be clearly defined such as (BLUE: WANNA ALLY UNTIL ROUND 8 or until further notice etc). I haven't come across an ally breaker in my games but that would piss me off.

And if one player is pointing things out to the others it doesn't mean they have a pact. Things like "Green has 40% of the armies on the board and is getting a bigger bonus than either of us, do you really think we should be fighting each other?" are common sense that unfortunately not all people see unless it's explicitly stated.

Alliances

Postby Unbound on Tue Jul 31, 2007 8:54 pm

Is it wrong to agree to an alliance in private chat prior to posting it in in the game chat?

Also, is it enough just say "Color 3 and Color 5 have formed an alliance." or do details the parties have agreed to also need to be stated?

setting up an alliance in private (or "secret" chat to use a better word) is classed as a secret alliance and where alot of people you ask secretly will probably accept the alliance and say nothing, you are sure to find members who will report you. its just sneaky and unfair and many members will place you on ignore if when they find out.

No. It's perfectly ok to propose an alliance through a private message and agree to one in private as longs as one declares the alliance in the game chat before it kicks in.

Setting up an alliance outside of the game chat doesn't make it a secret alliance. (And sneaky and unfair is a matter of opinion. Your opinion in this case.)

1. No. You can set it up/discuss it anyway you like as long as you announce it in the game chat before you apply it. It's not a rule violation at least.

2. Yes. All you need to state is that you have an alliance. No need to disclose more.

I don't see how that is a secret alliance. Until agreed upon, there is no alliance. Of course once there is agreement, announcement in game chat advising of the, then existance of such an agreement should be obviously be made. So the actual alliance is not a secret.

Yes alstergren, exactly. You understand/interpret the concept as I do.

Discussion is not an alliance.

An alliance takes mutual agreement between two or more parties to the details/specifics of a pact to conform an act, or series thereof, bennificial to agreeing parties.

Where I was coming from is from the point of view of transparent game play. I don't like the idea of someone trying to ally via pm. I guess it is "my opinion" but i'm sure many would agree to my point at least. I prefer to point things out in games via chat rather than allying.

Yep, I'm pretty sure thats covered in the 'common sense' category of rules re; secret alliances. At a real life tournament you wouldn't be sneaking off and whispering in the corner, would you?

unfortunately not everyone is blessed with common sense so it kinda has to be beaten into them.

To get back to proposing an alliance by pm, I think everyone who has tried to do so with me has received a negative for displaying bad sportsmanship.
I know it's not forbidden to agree to an alliance before announcing it in the game chat, but in my opinion (that's what I call "preemptive", alstergren) it's extremely bad sportsmanship.

LOL. I think alliances are bad sportsmanship anyhow anywhere. Doesn't matter how they are proposed. But no one is innocent, I've entered into one or two alliances myself. Nothing that I'm proud of though.

Yes, and someone just mentioned in a newer, related, Forum post the possibility of two people (friends etc.) who might discuss froming an alliance prior to or outside the game altogether. That would be no different than private chat discussion. Even if they posted the alliance as required in game chat would it not?

And to take it a step further, if one person had a different account on two computers, a home and a work or school computer, what's to stop him/her from playing in the same game with both and announcing an alliance?
