Steps to Winning#1:Grab a Bonus Region

Postby Honibaz on Mon Jul 30, 2007 4:51 am

*Not all of this applies to the Circus Maximus map since you cannot get bonuses on it

There are 2 key factors in winning in any type of conquer club games. They are luck and armies. You could say that there is a 50-50 balance between these two factors. Now there really can't be anything done to your luck in order to win(unless you know how to hack into random.org and control the dice roll results), but you could do something to your armies to win, and that is by taking ahold of a group of countries or one country that gives you bonus armies. Do all that you can to conquer a bonus region first, before you do anything else. Without your bonuses, you won't have extra armies. Without extra armies, you could be more vulnerable to defeat. Taking a bonus region also means that you have to guard it well. Remeber that there will be players that will attempt to sack your territory with their every army so you do not get a bonus. Defend all you could, and if all else fails look for another bonus region.

What do you base that 50-50 balance on?

AND you forgot the other way of accumulating armies.

My posts are full of glitches, let's pretend that this had never happened.

The common mistake people make when attempting to follow your line of thought is to forget that armies you lose while taking territories are also armies that could have helped you not be defeated. Over-stretching yourself to take a bonus, and then being broken, is likely to lead to a quick defeat.

A bonus that you can take and hold is worth a lot, but one where you are constantly having it broken and spending even just 2 or 3 armies to retake is costing you, not helping you.

Sorry to tell you guys this late, but I was hoping to write more on Steps to Winning if it was popular. Turned out that there was many glitches so don't follow what I've said in this topic!

Or at least try playing 100 games, winning 100 games can take some time, unless you play realtime doubles with an experienced partner against noobs.

Wow...how intriguing. Take bonus regions to get more armies.

Another downside to taking bonus regions as soon as possible (other than stretching yourself thin) is that if you're one of the first players to do so you often make yourself a target for the other players. Everyone views you as a threat and there's a tendency to gang up on that player.

I think it's better to be the 2nd or 3rd person to take a bonus region. You stay under the radar more that way. Obviously, it depends on the number of players and the game board.

i wouldnt say wait to be the second on third person to take bonus as that can be too late sometimes. what i would think would be better is if u build up while getting cards, so that once u get the blue or mixed set along with the armies u have been building up can do a blitz strike for a cont bonus and yet still be able to hold it will sufficient success. but im not expert on this so, dont take my words too seriously

I love how everyone thinks this is dumb or obvious. Considering that I've played with a lot of people that don't seem to get it. We should be nicer to the newer people. Everywhere is turning into the flame forum. I can sense some mods becoming quite annoyed with it, so it should probably stop soon before they start making Ak_iceman do dirty things to people.

I was suggesting that they would probably use him to ban people for flaming outside of flame wars since he already has the negative PR, but sure, that's whatever you said for you.

One advantage to stretching yourself over getting a second continent is that your opponent must choose between where to put their armies- as in which continent to attack. If they're far away and you use a card bonus to get both at once, you put your opponent in a precarious position in which you get at least one continent bonus, and they'll have stretched themselves to get to that continent, so they'll be easy picking once you get the other continent's bonus.

Or at least that's my take. I'm new, so I suppose my advice isn't worth much at the moment.
