Need lessons

Postby LiamRiordan on Mon Jul 30, 2007 2:41 am

I have played a few matches, and lost pretty badly in all of them. I need help. I always play the British Isles map because I like it and its my home. Can anyone help me?

EDIT: I like playing this game even though I am really bad at it, if I can just get my tactics right I would enjoy it more and give other players a challenge.

The "I must get a card this turn no matter what" mentality will lose you more games than it wins. In the first few turns, it's okay to drop your armies and end your turn without attacking.

A nooby question but how do I get cards? Do I have to own a continent or a portion of the map?

every time you conquer territory you get a card when you end the turn.didn't say you have to attack every turn at any cost-you have to evaluate the situation.(but early on i suggest you do generally but be careful where you attack, depends on type of game you're playing - works for me) and have to have a bit of luck.

You should always get a card unless there are no territories that you can reasonably expect to take. In flat rate, on average, a card is worth around 7 armies every 3 turns, so each card is worth 2.3 armies. That's certainly less than your expected loss attacking a 1 or a 2, and probably a 3.

In escalating, it can be worth not taking a card early on as long as you're not at risk of elimination, as cards are worth more the later it gets in the game. I am no good at escalating though.

Obviously in no cards attacking is something to be done with care and not necessarily every turn.

This is veering offtopic, but...

I see too many players (mostly newbies) who drop 3 armies on the first turn, attack twice and lose 4 armies, and then spend the rest of their armies on futile 3-on-3s trying to get a card. I also see lots of players with 1600+ ratings who drop their armies and pass without attacking, even in flat rate games. Sometimes it's not worth wrecking your position in the first few turns just for the chance of getting a card.

True about flat rate, but that applies more to phases later in the game I think, If I face 20 armies in every territory I can attack I have no problem at all with deploying my armies and waiting instead of getting a card. Even if I have 40 to take out those 20 with. Early on it is more important to get cards, preferably a mixed set for securing a continent. Of course, if you're down to 2vs2 battles you should stop immediately.
