Players Talking in Other Languages

Postby shambles on Fri Jul 06, 2007 9:10 am

Now I'm not some lingusitic imperialist, unlike the throngs of Americans who come to London on holiday and are heard commenting on the underground about how we in England refuse to speak 'American', but people chatting away in game chat in other languages makes it a little tricky for the rest of us to know what's going on. Are they making an alliance? Are they calling us all wankers? Are they discussing the latest Dutch porn output? Who knows? It would be nice to know.

if somebody talks in game chat in another language it's best to ask them to speak english.

if this does not work there are plenty of online translators to help you.

if by any chance the translator is not helpful (spelling mistakes confuse translators) you can always ask a mod to assist you in this situation he can then get help from a native speaker of that language to tell you what's going on.

Im in a game right now with some guys who are speaking dutch.....and you're right......it may not be happening...but it sure makes me watch out for alliances......its just not cool in my opinion to speak a language that some players cant understand when you can speak english well enough to play fair. but.....thats what ignore lists are for...... I ask politely once.....then.....poof....bye bye.......  I wait till the end of the game, in case they have something to say to me in english..but if there's no explanation of why they're doing that......fuggim.......

The site is English based, but the forums have plenty of space for foreign speakers. It's not exclusivly english.
It's worth noting that the game itself requires minimal english to play. You can figure most things out easily, especially if you've played a similar version of the board game in translation. However, discussing tactics is very high level English. You shouldn't expect a detailed discussion in a language that you're comfortable with when many players who are fluent in English say nothing at all.
Being suspicious of someone for being foreign ain't my thing. If they really want to cheat, they'll do it the same way other people do. You'll most likely find that the evil foreigners are bitching about the dice.
