the 'go after the top ranked' mentality

Postby Trevor33 on Tue Aug 30, 2011 9:53 pm

what is the obsession with some people only attacking the highest ranked in games? something i've noticed in team games recently, 2 strong teams and one weakish team. every time the second strongest attacking the strongest thus giving the perceived weakest team the game.

i mean, this isn't low ranked players doing this... you would think anyone above 1600 would have an idea of how to win a game.

i'm playing two games at the moment with tis scenario and in both games captains are ruining it for both my and their team. why? why play the rating instead of the board? drives me mad.

Are you referring to Game 9516669? I would consider those two Captains to have the dominant position in that game, though I am not an expert by any means.

that's one of the games i'm talking about, yes. team 2 is clearly leading in troop count and in position, only question is if they know how to exploit it.

Profit-seeking incentives provide lesser skilled players with the capability to overcome the collective action problem of eliminating the most skilled, thus most dangerous, opponent--as they perceive that top-ranked player to be. [/economic way of thinking]

I suggest writing a Conquer Club Manifesto that blames capitalism for this perceived injustice.

Higher Ranks are often perceived as a bigger threats, even if they are only as threatening as other players on the gameboard. The perception that a higher rank may fair better because of their knowledge/strategy, and thus, become more of a threat/menace to one's winning is probably seen as an 'x-factor' that some attribute to those with higher ranks.

Interesting point andy, I would have to concur. Back when I was a low rank at the beginning i was weary of higher ranks and preferred if they were eliminated as soon as possible..

Good idea. Attack the weakest lowest ranks first and keep the points loss down to a minimum. lol. Of course the higher ranking team are the biggest threat.

if you keep attacking i think you'll find the other team is the biggest threat. i don't care which team wins if i don't but i'd expect people rated around 2000 to be able to see when they're getting their ass kicked by the 'weaker' team. i thought the whole point of the game was to win, not to prevent a stronger team from winning.

i'm not complaining about lower ranked players attacking higher ranks in singles games, i try and avoid being the highest ranked player in a game i'm talking about people who have achieved a good rank only attacking the better team on paper and letting the other team win.

this is funny because once I was in an 8-player single game and I was the only one who was still in the stripes. I felt like they were all ganging up on me to keep me from winning. (of course they may not have been true).

But yeah I don't pay attention to rank most of the time.
