Volunteer progammer?

Postby Gillipig on Fri Aug 05, 2011 6:48 am

I find the slow updates problem very bothering! I understand lack hasn't got much time and that's why the updates are so few and far between. But I don't know why there are no volunteer programmers??? Some guys spend half their wake hours on this site so some are prepared to give up the time required. and surely there most be some programmer among them! Whoever does this and help get the updates done more quickly would be looked upon as a god among fellow players so there's motivation to do it! Can anyone explain to me where the real problem is because I can't see it!?

lackattack does not want to share his codebase with anyone unless he can help it. He does not allow volunteers to see the codebase and make changes, regardless of how much this may improve the flow of updates.

Ace, you are being your usual joker self again i see... Its not true though. Lack did share the coding, but the volunteer or paid programmers he took on simple did not do the work expected, for various reasons. Also lack has some pretty good reasons not to share certain information too freely, some still remember wicked and a few other incidents.

also gillip, if its soo easy you do it.. i for hell can't. Its easy to say something should take only 5 minutes or something, but often it is not. its a piece of complex programming and testing required that even then not always does what it was supposed to do. i admire the guys who have build and maintained the add-onns though. epic.

asside from that, i do hope on some tools and updates, but then aparently we are all waiting for it, just that some are waiting for different stuff then others.. that too is a problem

I was not joking in the least in my original post. I stand by what I said 100%.

The people he hired were cheap Singapore programmers, and there was no reason for them to finish the job that he hired them to do once they were over their heads. You get what you pay for.

Since Ace Rimmer has been out of Team CC for a while, his information is a little stale.

Lack has been making changes to allow the Tech Team greater access to tools for better script development, maintenance in conjunction with updates, and hosting. We'd rather have the Tech Team try not be a web developer and a script development/maintenance/bug spotter team. We'd like to kick start our review of Web Developing before the year is out. Our plan of attack is quite a bit different than our previous iterations, so the chance of finding a successful and business/cost-effective developer will be much higher.

Edit: The previous web developers weren't 'cheap Singapore' programmers, that is just inaccurate. ;)

I never said I think it was easy seb! I said that some people who spend half their wake hours on this site could do the job and put up the time needed if they a) are a programmer, b) got the permission! I'm neither a programmer or willing to spend the time needed to help out with this. But that's not the thing. The thing is that a volunteer programmer who dedicate a lot of time here shouldn't be impossible to find or motivate since he'd be more highly revered than anyone else for the work he could provide. I'm guessing there's at least some truth in ace's comment and unfortunately the ball is not in our hands so we can't do anything about this problem regardless of how much we want to! That's quite depressing actually  !

I'm a programmer, but I don't feel I have enough experience to run a website like this. PLus, I surf this site for fun, if it becomes like work... IDK. maybe I could help out with this one day, but who knows?
Yeah this site is complex and it requires a lot to keep it going.

In the next couple of weeks, we should have an announcement to make relevant to the discussion in this topic. Stay tuned until then. :) :D

Sounds like my timing is as always spot on :P ! I hope it's someone playing on this site. The chance of this not working out is probably bigger if an outsider tries to do it! I'm holding my thumbs and big toe's for this to work out!!

Honestly, living in HK, if lack had gone with Singapore, he would have likely gotten some quality work. The quality of Singapore work is very high, and they have excellent research support in their universities.

Yeah, because "Made in Hong Kong" is a well-known seal of quality.

That is, if you pay them well :).

Great, an announcement to tell us that it might take slightly less than four years for accepted suggestions to be implemented. I can hardly wait.

You were pleased when lack introduced the "skip game" feature even though the majority of users still don't even know what it's for, let alone use it.
